MG MGF Technical - Problem Remote!
Hi there Not sure if this has been mentioned before, but i am currently having problems with my remote/blipper! It locks the car fine, either one lock or double locked. But when I come to unlock the car, its very unreliable. Sometimes I have to virtually pushing it at the window, and other times it does not work at all. So I have to unlock the car with the key and then sit for, what seems like hours, in the car pushing frantically at the button until eventually the immobiliser de-activates. Have tried several new batteries, but that makes no difference and it seems to be getting worse. So please help cos its getting a little frustrating!! Michael

Michael, have you tried extending the arial ?? - I did this myself last week, following instructions given on this BBS, and the difference is amazing !! - I can now lock/unlock the car from 5-6 yards away, rather then the previous couple of feet. Jonty

I know this sounds mad, but believe me it works....push the remote under the bottom of your chin when pressing the button. It would appear that your head amplifies the signal, and reduces the problem! I've tried it, like many other people on the BBS, and there don't seem to be any side effects - although my other half may disagree!!! Cheers Paul PK51VDL - Yellow Trophy

Would recommend to check the battery contacts inside the blipper regarding corrosion. Remove corrosion with thin piece of wood (matches i.e.) Does the spare blipper the same ? Dieter
Dieter Koennecke
Oh, and if the blipper gets out of sync with the car (because for instance you were too far away) then it will take upto four pushes for the car to get back in sync with the blipper.
Will Munns
Michael I am having the exact same problem, am I'm begining to get P***ed off with it nothing wrong with blipper, new battery, all sync'd up loacking and super locking is perfect 100% of time it's just unlocking which can take 10 minutes of being sat in the stupid car and umpteen presses before it decides to release the alarm cars going back to dealer again, I'll let you know what they say, although I've asked how much they will offer me for it so I might not get it back!! oh and of course add to that that my emergency key access code is wrong, thanks MG.. I'm assuming it's the microswitch on the remote, anybody know how much a new one is???? -matt M66 MAT

matt, don't you have two remotes- is the problem the same?
Will Munns
Found my ashray full today and I'm looking also for someone with a great offer for the old to let me get a new car ;) *g* I'm sorry but couldn't resist. >oh and of course add to that that my emergency key access code is wrong, thanks MG.. Add one to the second and one to the 4th digit and it will work. 4568 getts 4679 then. Push switches inside are standard electronics parts. Can be changed at any electronic specialsist or good friend with soldering iron and some DIY skills. New blippers were recently offererd by someone from the UK at http://www.ebay.com from 15 quid upwards. Official new blippers are cheaper in any way if orderd with Rover 'Landy' part numbers. Same design, but no 'MG added value'. Any more questions ? :) Dieter

Will I only have the one, car was secondhand when I got it and it only came with the one key/blipper, dunno why -matt M66 MAT |
matt
4568 gets 4669 then. To be correct

I too only have the one blipper as the car was second hand and the previous owner had only sent to one blipper to the dealer. I have tried cleaning the contacts, so they seem ok, but may try some more. Have not tried 'extending the arial', but maybe its my ignorance but....... how do you do that?? I am even now willing to try Pauls idea of pushing the button while under my chin. Not sure if my head will be big enough to amplify the signal, and feel sure i may look a bit of an ar*e, but am willing to try anything. Cheers for the help so far Michael

My MGF suffers the same problem (I have two fobs with new batteries) - I reckon this will become on a par with HGF - mine is a 97P and I now carry the immobilising deactivate code with me everywhere - I meant to try extending the wire at the weekend but did'nt - too busy enjoying the sunshine :-)

Putting the blipper under your chin works very well. Mine works up to 50 yards away but is reduced to a foot or two if there is strong interference. Once I had to resort to the key code because the interference was so strong. Michael If the problem always occurs in the same place then suspect local interference. I find the best place to place the blipper is smack in the middle of the front screen. Bruce

I don't believe it! I tried using the blipper under my chin and its worked everytime. But still, i can't always do it that way. But cheers for that pointer anyway!! Michael

>> Have not tried 'extending the arial', but maybe its my ignorance but....... how do you do that?? << You'll find pictures and an article about the blippers on http://ultimatemg.com under the FAQ section. Stefan
Stefan Gibney
Stefan, Would you allow me to use that article in the new MGF/TF FAQ that I'm gradually putting together? And possibly any similar info from your site. Anything use would naturally to credited to you or the person who wrote the article. ;-)
Paul Lathwell
Michael, I had my blipper fixed at the local MGR garage on Saturday. They tried the battery and that did not work so had to fit a whole new electronic pad inside - the cost - £98.00 - you can imagine my response. Sarah

When were incorrect emergency key access code issued by MGF? My code hasn't worked, even after adding one to the second and one to the 4th. Is it possible the code is completely wrong?
Sara
My code was wrong from November 96.

Paul >> Would you allow me to use that article in the new MGF/TF FAQ that I'm gradually putting together? << Go for it ... would you link back to my site?? Stefan

In the short time I have been reading this BBS I have read some real c**p but this idea of putting the zapper under your chin to extend the operating range really takes the biscuit. However ... IT WORKS!!!!! When I contact the BBS I'm not just looking for a quick solution I'm usually looking for an explanation as well. Somewhere in the world there must be a BBS member who knows why. If this person can also explain to thickies like myself then could we please hear from them. Anybody out there from Marconi or similar companies?

>>t locks the car fine, either one lock or double locked. But when I come to unlock the car, its very unreliable.<< Just another thought (having literally just having bought a new replacement case for my car's blipper this morning) could the rubber button be the problem not engaging the electrical contact on the printed circuit board properly? Cost of a replacement case for the blipper that comes inclusive of the rubber buttons, is a very reasonable £1.56 :o)

It's possible that placing the blipper to your chin forms a loop of approximately the right dimensions to be resonant at 430mhz or whatever frequency the blipper works at. Thus the loop of your arm, jaw, shoulder and blipper becomes a tuned aerial. The correct length for a quarter wave aerial is the same length as the receiver aerial under the dash which is about the distance from your elbow to your finger tips. High frequency aerials can be formed by all sorts of peculiar setups. Dieter once said that he uses the rim of his metal framed glasses in much the same way. Perhaps Carl in Sweden can throw some light on this question? Bruce
Bruce Caldwell
Hi all, As Bruce say“s the chin trick can make wonders to blipper range. As can almost all other "extensions" close to the blipper - such as metal frames in glasses etc. But it is not actually the antenna itself that gets boosted but the "counterweight" to the antenna wich is the so called groundplane.. Really doesn“t matter, main thing is that it works ! The reciever antenna (the yellow cable ) is a bit miss-placed, the whole system would be soo much more sensitive if that antenna was mounted as in some other cars. The plastic housing for rear mirrors is one fine place but requires a rather long run of thin coaxial cable... BR, Carl. (Soon off to THE main racing weekend of the season, and in clear skyes + glorious summer heat !) |

tHANKS gUYS (WHOOPS) Certainly improves the range. It also seems to now go through at least 2 intervening cars, or possibly bounces off a convenient satelite and over offending objects?
JohnP
This may sound stupid but after reading over and over again about this chin trick i tried it myself and yes it did work.. but then i noticed that it wasnt the fact that it was touching my chin that made the difference but that my blipper was pointing skywards and not towards the car. I tried other random body parts and none of them improved the reception of simply pointing the blipper upwards. Am I the only one whose body is not compatible with the MGF?
