MG MGF Technical - Put in too much oil!

Ok, I stupidly put in too much oil last night int he dark when "topping up".

What's the best thing to do?

empty some out or will it be ok?

Thanks
Darran

empty some out.
How much too much?
Will Munns

Will quite a bit! I rubbish with cars as you can now tell!

The dip stick was about 1cm below the min level so I bought 1lt of oil and put just over half in and it started to spill out/overflow! then when I check the dip stick there was oil al the way up!

I was tired and half asleep in my defense! haha

Is it easy to empty it out? it's a TF160 can you let me know what to do?
Darran

You can't have over filled it with half a litre of oil. When you check the oil you need to wipe the dipstick after removing it, and reinsert it to check the oil level. On lots of engines, as you tip it in the top, it runs down the dipstick, giving the impression that it's full to the brim.

N is right, you should be OK - and if you topped up the oil without removing the dipstick, the reservoir that holds it before it drains down the dipstick tube may have filled with oil, which would have caused it to overflow. It really does trickle down surprisingly slowly.

If you poor your oil in too quick it will fill the dipsick tube as they are one and the same. If you study the oil filler you will see it reduces down and blends into the dipstick tube, so always poor slowly and carefully.
Dave

as all have said the hole you poured into is for small top-ups, and you simply have to let it drain down.

For reference the level between min and max is about 1 litre.
Will Munns

Thanks guys! didn't think 3/4 of a litre would have done that! sorry it's been one of those weeks!

Obviously I'll remember to remove the dipstick when re-filling next time!
Darran

The most important thing is "nice and slow". Once you have started don't pull out the dipstick, and simmilery if you had got to overflowing with the DS removed then it would have poured out of there as well, so you'd be in the same mess asking the same question anyhows.

Don't worry, in a year you'll be changing your cambelt with your eyes closed whilst welding with your spare hand ;-)
