MG MGF Technical - Putting it away, sniff :o(
Good morning all, I hope everyone is well :o) I'm soon to be putting my R reg MGF away :o( for a while, possibly up to 6 months in a friends garage. Does anyone have a list of jobs that need to be done to prevent too many issues when I next come to use it? The only answer i got from my local garage was to keep the weight of the car off the tyres (jack it up I spose) and to disconnect the battery. Any thoughts anyone? Thanks in advance Garfy |

Hi, Mine have been locked away for over two years now, I have a battery saver plugged into the battery to keep it topped up, but I've not put the car on stands, and last June the tyres appeared fine, put the hood up and cover the car with something to keep the dust off, at least cover the hood, MS sunmate is a good idea to keep the softtop clean at the cat off the fabric. Also empty the glove box of boiled sweets :-) Oh and don't forget to leave the handbrake OFF Mike |

Why store it, Garfy, why not lend it to someone for the period so it gets used? Someone you've never met maybe, someone who's wife already has one, someone who would cherish it and polish it and maybe lives in Wimborne. Someone called Adam maybe? ;-) |

Hi Garfy, My 1998 MGF will also be garaged as of the 1st October -I only ever tax it for six months of the year. I disconnect the battery and cover the car with a sheet - on the first Sunday of every month I start it up and reverse it down the drive - this will be the third year I have done this and pleased to report 'it works for me' ! Fanx everyone, seems pretty simple. I'm off to Spain for a little while and hope to get the MG out with me next year :o). I know your game Adam, you say you'll look after it, but you'll exchange all the parts onto your wife's. I think you could be a body snatcher ;o) |

I would be inclined to take out the plastic inner wing liners and ensure that the metal area between door and inner wing is free from muck and dirt. Then give it a really good dose of waxoyl. It would be a shame to come back later and find rust bubbling through. dave |

I would definitely take the weight off the tyres. They will deform if left standing still for a long period. |

I have always put my MG away for the winter. Leave battery connected with trickle charger and I push the car 1/2 mtr every 2 weeks but do not lift wheels - cannot be bothered and not necessary if car is moved forward / back every few weeks. I also lower both of the windoes 1 cm to get air through cabin. Has always started first time in the spring!!!! |
