MG MGF Technical - Rad fan not working

My radiator fan has packed in, I checked the BBS and Archive for info on the subject and have changed the sensor also cleaned the contacts with electrical contact cleaner but it's still not working, any ideas ??

Rob Bristow

Assuming you have a pre-2000 F

Pardon me for asking the obvious -

have you checked fuse 6 in the main inside fuse box?
JohnP

Sorry Rob, I believe that should be 15a fuse 6 under bonnet for radiator fan. The incar fuse 6 is engine bay cooling fan.

Thanks for the info John, I forgot to say it's a 1995 mpi, I checked the fuses which are okay and the fan runs when the sensor wire is disconnected and engine is running. I have fitted a bypass switch so that I can leave the sensor connected and maually control the fan or leave it on auto, also a warning light to show when the fan is actually running.
I know it's a bit over the top but I had a engine blow earlier this year through HGF..
Rob Bristow

Rob, that will over rich the engine, you need a new sensor, there are two listed by MGR, did you get the late one by accident?
Will Munns

This is very odd Rob - I assume you got the GTR206 sensor from Rover?
Rob Bell

Yes, I've fitted the proper sensor.

Will, My idea in fitting the bypass switch was so that I could only switch the fan on (fool it into thinking the sensor has been unplugged) when and if the engine starts to overheat so not effecting the engine management too much.

The new sensor/fan did work the first time I ran it up to temperature on the drive but not when I road tested it a few days later.
Strange or what!
Rob Bristow

Hmn, you arn't getting overheating when moving right?
Will Munns

Rob, dumb question I know, but have you cleaned the contacts in the loom plug as well?

I wonder if there is a problem with the wiring loom actually - perhaps a partial break that is increasing the resistance across the sensor?
Rob Bell

It starts to overheat after about 15 / 20 mins of normal running then is okay when I switch the fan on.
Rob Bristow

I've just finished cleaning the contacts on the EMS box and associated wiring plugs but not had time to test, faulty/broken wire next suspect on list.
Rob Bristow

Similar 'odd' problems with this sensor (and the TPS sensor).

Both were down to broken wires - one within the connector block. A right pain in the bum too!

Good luck.
