MG MGF Technical - Radiator fans. How to be sure?
Even after a hard drive on a sunny day -35°C- I did not hear the radiator fans switching on. Is any way to be sure whether they are functional? |

yup, undo all the bolts on the engine bay and locate the brown sensor (centre of engine bay, on a pipe elbow exiting the head, look for the radiator pipes - where they enter the head) Squeeze on the metal clip and unplug now starting the car the radiator fan will come on, if not then check the fuses. |

Me again. It's a new year, and I'm determined to get all the gripes sorted with my 99 F VVC I have the opposite problem to JM Vega. The front radiator fan stays on all time time, even in 1 degree C weather, and yet the engine temp is normal, and the coolant is properly topped up. Is there another sensor for this, and if i need to disconnect the brown clip, when you say remove all the engine bolts, do you mean uncover the engine by removing the hood and "parcel shelf", or can i get to it through the boot engine access? Cheers, Tony |

You would need funny shaped arms and an endoscope - much easier with hood and parcel shelf removed. |

If the radiator fan is running the whole time, then I would suggest that the sensor plug has become disconnected, or the wiring has an internal break; the resistance across the sensor has to be at infiniti to trigger the fail-safe on mode for the rad fan... |

Hello Joan, this isn't the place to post chat about videos off-topic, have a look at the category list http://www2.mgcars.org.uk/cgi-bin/gen5?runprog=mgbbs&access=&mode=&source=&subject=&thread= to find a more appropriate place. Anyhooo, back to topic, I've established that the fan is not infact on all the time, but generally after a run home sub 10 degree C without traffic or bombing up the motorway. I do have the blowers on though, and when I turn them off can hear the fan. Could this contribute to the radiator fan needing to be on? Cheers, Tony |

Hello, can someone please advise as to when the radiator fan should/shouldn't come on? I'd assume it's when the temp indicated by the dial goes over a certain level, but perhaps it's also needed when the car's blowers are switched to heat? Cheers, Tony |

Nope, the fan comes on when it gets hot enough (110?) and off again at 95 IIRC, the gauge reads one notch below centre from about 60 to "too hot" and then shoots up |
