MG MGF Technical - Radio Cassette
I have tried to remove the original MGF Radio Cassette without success. I am using the correct removal tools (looks like thin u bolts) I hear the click from both sides but only one side of the unit can be pulled out slightly, the other won't budge. I suspect the frame inside has snagged on the unit, does anyone have any ideas. I have tried removing the side panels, the ones with the footwell interior lights in and put my hand in the back to push the unit out but its jambed solid. Thanks Alan

The radio slides into a frame that itself slides into the fascia - the frame or box is held in place with a couple of metal tags that push out from the sides of the box - it may be possible to use a thin screwdriver to push these back from behind (with the cheeks removed)- I have not tried it myself as I have always managed to remove the radio using a suitable tool to release the 'locks' and a stubby screwdriver as a lever on each side. Dont think I have said too much as I am sure 'tea-leaves' know more about it than I do. BTW don't forget to make sure you have the security code handy if you do get the radio out and disconnect it you will need to re-input the code when reconnected. Ted

You don't say which year / model - that might help pin point the problem, although Halfords took mine out for free. Although it doesn't sound like the new model, for the record, if its a 2001 MY the unit is held in (on each side) by a single allen key that moves a wedge to lock against the rear of the aperture. There isn't a factory fit metal frame. Insert an allen key (about 2-3mm a/f) spin acw for ages until you can pull unit fwd (grip the cassette slot). The allen screw is held captive so wont disappear into thin air!

Thanks Ted and Ian. I will try this and if not go to Halfords. Its a Mk1 by the way Alan

Try using a bit more brute force Alan :-) btw if anyone has a radio surplus to their requirements that would like to turn intio a very modest pile of cash I can find a good home for it. jt

Alan, Prise out the central airvent above the radio and look down on top to see if any wires/connectors are snagged. Remove the vent by prising at the bottom edge with a wide flat tool. HTH Bruce

John I may have a standard CD player out of a Trophy available soon. It's only 3 weeks old, but I'm thinking of changing it for a Sat-Nav flip screen unit. It all depends on what you would be offering. Cheers Paul

Alan, it sounds that you were doing everything right. Maybe as John says, you need to apply a little more effort and maybe wiggle the unit a little more? A picture of how I did it on this page that details installing an autochanger into the glove box: http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/installing_cd_player.htm

I once removed a radio from my wifes 'f' to find the wiring harnes for the engine management system which runs behind the radio had been rubbing against the rear edge of the bracket (which is razor sharp) and started to short out, blowing the 30 amp fuse in the box under the bonnet causing the engine to cut out.

The radio removal is not very well designed, and the best option is to pull the one side you can get out forward slightly and then try pushing in the fork into the other side. When you remove the radio you will see that the fork slips into runners on the far side, and a slight miss-location will cause it to miss the runners and the radio will not move (which is a bit of an ar*e) Will
