MG MGF Technical - Rain stops door signal

I hve just had the strangest of experiences.

It was raining quite hard today and their was a fair amount of water on all windows. When I tried to lock the car with the remote - it refused to work.

The battery is new and works well. All I can think is that the water droplets were big enough to reflect the beam from the controller. It took quite a few minutes walking around the car to get it to lock. Even directly through the back window failed. Half an hour later with a dry car the remote worked from a distance of a metre from the car.

Anyone else had this problem. First time for me and I have had the car for five years.

I've experienced problems using the zapper from time to time and have walked around the car trying various angles in the past.

However, as I am sure you know, it seldom rains in the UK so this one could be new to us.
John Ponting

I have to do rounds around the car from time to time as well. And, like the UK (as John was "Ponting" out), it hardly ever rains in the Netherlands :-)
So, don't think it's the rain.

Happens to me occasionally so I just stick it into my chin and it always then works.....

Local interference can seriously affect the range of the blipper. I had trouble in a car park once. The interference, presumably from a nearby microwave dish, was so bad that the blipper would not work, even when pressed up to the receiver aerial! Eventually had to push the car 30 metres down the road where the blipper worked OK. It was a lesson in being prepared. I should have practiced using the Key Access Code. If I had then I would have found out in time to discover that the code I had been given by Rover was incorrect.

As Steve says, pressing the blipper to the underside of the tip of your chin, while you press the button, works wonders.

I had this same problem a few weeks ago but thankfully it occured when there was access to an MGR Testbook. Once wiring the machine up it turnout that the electrical connectors within the doors had taken in water and were infact a little corroded anyway. You could therefore try to clean the connecting plugs inside the door with come contact cleaner, and then give it another try.

Remember, the blipper is a radio device, not an infra red one. Water droplets will not affect it.
