MG MGF Technical - Random car alarm activation
Hi All, Got an interesting issue with my 99 F. At about 3:30 am this morning, my car alarm went off. My wife had to wake me (I sleep through anything) and I eventually ran down stairs to see no one there or any damage to the car. Thought it might have been a cat or something. Went back to sleep. However, at 7:30 am this morning, the alarm did the same thing. Was activated with no apparent reason. The car is undercover through the night. Any ideas what might be setting it off? Cheers Sonny |

I doubt it is the same cause as yours, but my alarm went off every time I went to visit my parents. Car parked outside their kitchen window, and the alarm would trigger each and every time the microwave was used. It took ages to work it out! Hopefully there is a "simple" external explanation. |

phone left in car ? |

Ahhh yes, good point Will, that was the other cause. Not even a call, just seemed to be due to normal phone/network "chatter". |

Sonny, Given the timings - could be a taxi radio triggering the alarm. Sam |

If possible ,park the car at 180deg. to the "alarm on" for a test. If it helps , strong 2,4GHz entering thru alarm slot antenna from microwave source triggers the alarm. If no change, probably local intermittent transmitter on other freq. entering via the sloppy filtered cables to the Doppler unit ! There are means of decreasing the sensitivity, both with and without help from a dealer... / Carl. |

If it happened at 3.00am there is a possibility you are getting interference (SP?) from Taxi radios. There is one particular firm local to us whose radios always set our alarm off. Obviously their fequencies conflct with the alarm. It's a pain in the proverbial but nevermind... Sally |

Iv got a 96 vvc,my alarm goes off all the time, took it to my local mg garage, its a loose wire in the boot, every time it rains it goes off,im now on first name terms with my about hundred of my neighbours,so that could be the problem, but is was pricy to get it fixed. |

Stuart, The broken wire / electrical short at the boot hinge is a well known and documented fault. If that was your problem it's easy to fix and you could have sorted it yourself. Door microswitches...? MAde myself very popular with the neighbours with that one (particularly as I slept at the back of the house and had no idea it was going off) |
