MG MGF Technical - Rear Nearside Wheel Bearing.
My 2003 MG TF and just stated to make a groaning sort of noise when reversing off my drive. Any other time it is OK. Had the wheel off the Rear Nearside today, and it is a wheel bearing. Driver’s side is OK. How hard a job is it to change a bearing? Do I need any special tools? Any idea of Part Nos? And Price? Bearing =? Hub Nut=? Cheers, Gaz. |

so many questions. Some answers http://www.mgfcar.de/wheel_bearing/index.htm Check the BBS archives with keyword Timken also. HTH Dieter |

Thanks Dieter, very useful information. It seems like a fairly straight forward job. Just concerned it may have caused any more damage. Hub? Drive Flange? ABS Sensor? Gaz. |

If the wear in the bearing was severe i.e. wheel flopping around more than a few mm then the drive flange may have suffered. All will become apparent when you dismantle it... The upside if you have to fit a new drive flange is that you don't have to chisel the bearing carrier off the old one - that took me longer than the rest of the job did 8-( Last time I checked the best price for new bearings was from JRT Automotive - http://stores.ebay.co.uk/JRT-AUTOMOTIVE_MG_W0QQcolZ4QQdirZQ2d1QQfsubZ3QQftidZ2QQtZkm |

JRT still is the lowest price. They have hubs also, but IMO for NON ABS only. (Not sure about the difference between ABS hub and none ABS hub) |

Thanks for the information. Are these good quality bearings from JRT? Mike, what did you have to chisel off the Drive Flange? I thought the bearing was completely left in the Hub? And you just pressed the complete bearing out of the Hub? Thanks for your help. Gaz. |

The bearings from JRT are good enough to cope with regular track days on predominantly right-hand circuits ;o) When you press the drive flange out of the hub/bearing assembly, the bearing carrier that is a friction fit on the drive flange shaft tends to stay put, so will need to be removed from the drive flange ready for the new bearing to be fitted. Being able to clamp the flange in a very sturdy vice so you can attack it with a hammer & chisel is the key, I discovered. If you don't already have one, a breaker bar at least 600mm/2ft long is highly recommended for getting the hub nut undone, it's rather tight! My preferred technique is to remove the wheel, push out the wheel centre insert, re-fit the wheel and lower the car's weight onto it, engage a gear and put the handbrake on *firmly*. Depending on how deep your 32mm socket it, you may need a short extension to reach the nut. A decent set of circlip pliers helps too, the bigger the better. Other than that, it's a doddle ;o) |

I have just done this little job, in the end it cost me about £110 (£50 for the bearing and £60 for a new hub both from Rimmer Bros). It is possible to remove the bearing without the need for a press, but you do need a very big hammer and a suitably sized drift and a lot of nerve. When drifting the new bearing in make sure it aligned correctly, you will need a large socket on the opposite side to stop the bearing from splitting. If your lucky the job might only take you and hour and a half, start to finish. Tim |

Oops Typo. It is possible to remove the bearing without the need for a press, but you do need a very big hammer and a suitably sized drift and a lot of nerve. No of course not Ian. Just really proud that my car is on the web site and brochure ! |

Got my Bearing today and it has come with 2 type of circlips, but these are not of a type I have seen before. They have no holes for my circlip pliers to fit in to. |
GazSuttonUK |
Any idea how I remove these circlips from the hub? Gaz. |
GazSuttonUK |
The circlips can be easily removed by sliding the tip of a very thin screwdriver underneath the end of the clip, once levered-up use fine pliers to pull it away from the hub. Then you have the difficult bit of pushing the bearing out. Tim |
