MG MGF Technical - Rear Shock Bush Replacement
Whilst investigating a nearside rear braking squeal (and odd vibrating sound which persists a few seconds after lifting off the brakes) I noticed the lower shock has slipped off the bus, which appears to have the consistency of Liquorice!. The brake squeal has gone! but can anyone point me in the direction of 'simple' instructions on replacing the upper bush? Or can I get away with just doing the lower set. How do you get at the top mount? I intend doing the compliance washers at the same time, following Dieters instructions. Thanks, Charlie (Kent, UK,not USA) N reg VVC, 56 K, otherwise pretty standard. |

'bump' or should that be 'bang' given the shocking state of the shock bushes |

The top bush is accessed by removing the nut on the top spindle and these are located in the engine bay - you do need however to be able to hold the top cover - visible in the wheel arch - with a strap wrench or large pair of plumbers grips. You will need to have the car jacked up and the wheel removed for easy access, other than that the job is simple and takes about 15 minutes per shock absorber to do top and bottom bushes and as a BTW do not forget to use the special silicon grease that comes with the poly bushes - otherwise they tend to squeak. Also the top nuts are in a difficult position so you will have to experiment with spanners/sockets etc to be able to lock onto the nut. Ted |

I forgot to say that when you have removed the top nut and the bottom nut you can remove the shock from the car for fitting the bushes. Ted |

Torque setings for the bolts? OK, I'll buy a workshop manual! |

Change the lower washers for ones with a larger oustide diameter, so that the shock can't slide over the washer should the adhesion between bush and shocker eye weaken. It was a problem on some early cars (and Rover Metro)and is s simple thing to prevent. Rog |
