MG MGF Technical - Rear wheel bearing squealing

I have recently bought a 1996 MGFi.
I have a problem with the rear lefthand wheel bearing(or so it would appear?) not certain whether I am correct as I don't know how to remove it.Can anybody advise on how to remove as I don't have a workshop manual yet.

Since no one else has replied -

I'm guessing that you'll need to find a way of removing a rather large nut done up very tightly that holds the rear hub onto driveshaft.

One thought - if it's making a squeak/groan - it is the hub bearing not the joint on the driveshaft that is causing the noise?

Thanks for the reply.Very much appreciated.I was feeling a bit dismayed that no one had responded with this being my first visit to the web site. You have restored my faith in mankind!
I have resorted to sending the car back to the garage where I bought it.They phoned me back a few hours later saying the noise had misteriously disappeared??
I will let you know the result.

Thanks again, Anthony

Hi,
soryry for the poor response. It's almost useful checking the archives at first due to such specific works.

This is a document from a fellow BBS writer regarding the bearing change.
Please notice it's none professional :)

btw. such noise could happen as well from the brake pads or a loose damper. (IMO)

Hi,

As Dieter has stated, check that the rear inside calliper seized and the pad has just worn down. I had a similar problem which was just the break pad rubbing not the bearing.

To determine whether the bearing has gone or a ball joint needs replacing jack the car and feel for the type of play. It the wheel moves up and down then it is most likely the bearing but if the movement is side to side then most likely just the ball joints (a lot cheaper).

As far as the big nut on the hub, go to your local car parts factor and buy a 32mm socket.... that's the one you need as far as removing the nut you first need to lever back the crimp and then somehow lock the hub....That is as far as I got before aborting. :o)

AS, I've emailed you some pages from the WSM.

Got the car back from the garage yesterday.
They say that the brake caliper had partially seized and that it was rubbing on the disc. They stripped and cleaned, and judging by the amount of oil/grease appearing on the outside of the wheel gave it a significant amount of lubrication. All seems well at the moment. Thanks everyone for the advice.
