MG MGF Technical - Recent HGF - Question

Hi guys,

Just before Christmas I had HGF - I had it all sorted under warranty, which was nice.
But checked the dipstick the other day and there was white coolent on it!, I thought that I may have HGF again. Phoned the garage and they said it's normal to get this after a HG change and that it takes a while to go, is this true?, there are no other signs of the dreaded failure.

Mike, I know how you feel! I had HGF on my 'F on 27/12/02.
Re: the "white coolant" on the dipstick, are you sure they flushed out the cooling system with new coolant and then re-filled the system with more new coolant?
I would hope so as this is pretty basic to "flush through" but I would check with them.
If your operating temp is okay and you have no steam / loss of coolant I dont think you'll have had another HGF!
I'd take it back to the dealer & show them the remains of the emulsified coolant & demand that they drain/flush/& refill the sysytem.
Ensure they dont overfill the sysytem again over the joint mark on the expansion tank, as they over filled mine by about 3inches!!!!!

Thanks Stu,

Yeah I think I remember them over filling the header tank by about three inches.. Is this a problem then?

Guys,

would it be a good idea to change both coolent and oil in my car to get rid of this?

On the dipstick, could be fine, water will have go into the oil pathways and requires evaporating, esp in the cold weather the car will take some time to get up to temp (8-10 miles) only then will it start to evaporate water from the oil. Take it on a long run (a couple of hours) and check again.

Thanks Will,

I do have a funny kind of steam engine smell coming from the exhaust at the moment, which I guess is part of it. So you think that I should give it a long run and this will get rid of the problem?

Mike,

Following my HGF in September last year, there was so much mess caused by the mixing of oil and water, that I was advised to change the oil again, 500 miles on from the HG replacement. For the cost of the oil, this would seem a worthwhile precaution.

After my HGF, I was told to replace the oil completely again after 3 weeks of HG replacement, quite expensive considering I had fully synthetic. But I did and the white disappeared and never reoccurred.

That might just be the gaskets settleing down - are you sure it's from the exaust?

>So you think that I should give it a long run and this will get rid of the problem?
Not only that but you will justify the extra cost of running this great little car (wear a good coat and put the hood down)

Will,

Yes it is coming from the exhaust.
