MG MGF Technical - Reconditioned Engines

Hi Folks,

I am looking to obtain a rebuild VVC engine for my MGF however as a novice was wondering who you would recommend and what price I should expect to pay for one built to good tolerances.

Also someone mentioned to me a company called Ivor Searle as being specialists in MG engine reconditioning, Has anyone heard of this company? Is PTP engineering the best place to obtain a reconditioned engine that will run for years?

I know that reconditioned engines are a fine art and thus a difficult subject however your advice would be much appreciated.

I've heard of Ivor Searle but never used them.

Have you considered getting a low milage used motor from somewhere like http://www.mgfcentre.com ask for Victoria ?
JohnP

It all depends what you are looking for Steve. Are you looking for a standard engine in one which has been fettled to produce a little more power..... If the latter then you could try Dave Andrews www.dvapower.com, who it must be said is a bit of a guru. PTP have a pretty good rep for flowed heads but a bit pricey and you could try Mike Satur or even Owen at Race-speed who posted here yesterday.

If on the other hand you are looking for a decent oringinal power plant with incredible low mileage to replace your existing one then MGF Centre is the ticket. 01902 403045

It might be worth giving Dave or Mike a call to see if they have any standard engines available too.

Yes, they will deliver and pick up for free within 100? miles of Soham (near cambridge). Good guys, I went there to get some machining done on my crank.

Thanks for the comments guys, Key to me is reliability and an engine built to manufacturers tolerances this is however difficult to check as the engine builder will obviously seal the unit before shipment.

Hi Will so you have some experience with this engineering firm, Ivor Searle. I had also heard they were quite good...:) I guess they must be quite good as you have used them before... Is there anywhere I can find out about the tolerances they use when cutting valves, etc, if like PTP they replace a full set of pistons with matched liners or just one, etc? Do they have a website?

Cheers Steve

Seriously give Victoria a ring at the MGF center. I recently got an mpi engine from them and have to say that it is in very good condition. I really don't think you have anything to loose by phoning them. 01902 403045.

TBQH, they were the only people who had any sort of clue I spoke to! They (re)build all sorts of engines, for all manner of cars. I would suggest giving them a call.

Steve, in answer to your question regarding 'reconditioning' the tolerances for rebuilding are in the service manuals issued by Rover and in choosing a reconditioner ask if they know and follow these guidelines. Any one rebuiding a engine correctly will have no objection in supplying you a list of parts fitted and the specifications of these parts.
The K series engine,or any engine for that matter, requires careful attention to detail for a unit that will give a long service life.
Secondhand engines are a different issue and even new factory engines can fail.I suspect from your questions that you are wanting a engine that has been 'blueprinted'and this wil best be supplied by a specialist with this expertise rather than a general FER member.
New VVC units are are around £2200.00plus vat from Rover outlets and I would expect a rebuilt engine from a specialist would be around £1500.00 plus vat assuming you have a servicable unit to offer.(Fitting costs would be extra)
Hope that has been of some help.
Mike.
