MG MGF Technical - Replacement Catalytic Converter

Evening All

Have any of you had to replace your Catalytic Converter?

Mine has gone, rattling badly now, and i've been ringing around and got some wild quotes. They have been ranging from £118 - £250 (the latter from Rover of course!) How are they varying so much? is it the quality of materials or effectiveness of the Cat? What do I need to look out for?

Or can any of you recommend a reliable supplier? Hope you can. Look forward to any replies.

Best wishes

Steve

just like any other part that factors see a market for, it can be produced and sold through 'no-frills' outlets at a fraction of the Rover price, much of the latter is subsidising flash showrooms and Le Mans entries etc etc.

When we rolling road tested four different cats a few years ago, we didn't find much difference between them. All passed the emissions test and there was only a couple of bhp difference between the worst and the best.

Prices are coming down - the cheapest I found back then was from a place called Fuel Parts in Bromsgrove and cost £200 plus VAT (Rover were £250 plus VAT) but this wasn't Type Approved (at the time) so couldn't be fitted to an S reg or later car. I also had to get the flanges welded on to it.

I think there is a full report on the tests on Rob Bells website.

Steve, there are basically two types, the ceramic types and the stainless steel types, the ceramic ones can fail due to fracture ,which yours appears to have done. The stainless ones do not break and will take all kinds of abuse ,so these are the best types of replacements IMO. The ceramic type when they fail and start rattling will cause a blockage or a restricted flow of gasses, this can cause the particles of the broken cat to be drawn into the engine, this will wreck it so change the cat ASAP.HTH.

Dave, Paul and Mike, many thanks for responding, it has been rattling around for a while now so I will heed your advice Mike and search for a Stainless Steel one ASAP.

Many thanks

While you're at it, get some of the cat saver nuts so that it's easy to replace the exhaust when the time comes.

Or if you want to be really cheap, get a cat bypass pipe! I think you'd need to refit the cat for the MOT though.

I had a look at mine the other day and I can't see how I'll replace the exhaust without destroying the cat.
