MG MGF Technical - Reprogram FOB / Remote?
Hi All, Been a while since I was last here. Must mean the "F" is running sweet ;-) I have two remote FOBs with my 99 "F" but one is getting a little tired and doesn't work that well. Even after changing the battery, it still gives me problems. So, I decided to purchase a new unit. I bought a slightly used FOB off eBay in the UK and hadd it sent to Australia. Arrived alst night. I put in anew battery, did the routine of putting key in drivers side door, unlocking (but not opening door) and then pressing the lock button 4-8 times. I was under the assumption that this reprogrammed the FOB? Anyway, it didn't work. Any ideas how I get this FOB to work with my 99 "F"? THe FOB number on the back is the same for the old and replacement unit (3TXB). The only difference was that the old one has "CANADA 1984 101540" on the back, where the new unit doesn't. Please don't tell me I've got the wrong freq FOB. Thanks Sonny |

Sonny, I was under the impression that a dealer had to register the new keyfob into the alarm ECU, but I'm probably wrong. Just had a look in the service notes and they tell me how to remove the alarm ECU, but other than that doesn't seem to be much help. Would be interested to know what the answer is to this question myself! Rgds Stu |

I have a feeling that the Australian fobs work at a different frequency to the UK ones? In any case if the fob is compatible then you still need to have it linked to the car using a T4 MGR diagnostics computer before they will work. If the old fob was still functioning then strip the case and buttons off the new one and re house the old insides and that should improve the operation of the fob. |

My spare fob came via the America's and my local dealer programed it within 5 minutes for a nominal charge. |

Yup, the ECU needs programming to accept the new remote locking fob. And yes, there is more than one type of Lucas door locking remote - the Japanese spec cars use a different frequency IIRC. But Australian fobs should be the same spec as UK ones - so you should be in luck Sonny. Regarding the intermittent fob - it may be that the battery cage has got corroded contacts. Some contact cleaner spray could be all that is required to restore its operation to full health. :o) |

If you go to the Technical Archive 2005 and find Key Remote Fob you will find that the U.K. remotes are the wrong Mhz. Australia used 315Mhz compared to the U.K 433. Branko asked the question after he bought one from the U.K and could not program it. |

D'oh! Thanks Andrew :o) Is this a 'Pacific' thing? Dieter has more information on the blipper fobs on his website Sonny - which should aid identification of the operation frequency. Unfortunately, it may be that yours may not work with your car :o9 |

On a related topic, my spare fob locks the car but won't super-lock it. How come? Rob? Mike 1995 MGF 1.8i |

There isn't any reason I can think of why the spare will lock the car but not unlock it - particularly if the main key does lead to the doors superlocking? A strange one - perhaps a weak signal? Not a problem I've come across before if I am honest. |

Branko, Link didn't work for me. Can you e-mail it to me? Thanks Sonny |

Mike, I had the same problem with my spare fob, but changed the battery, and problem was solved. regards Kjeld |

Sorry Sonny, try this. http://www2.mgcars.org.uk/cgi-bin/gen5?runprog=mgbbs&mode=archiveth&subject=69&subjectar=69&thread=2005040803205428318 Cheers, Branko |

Well I've setup an auction to sell my 2nd remote blipper as I don't use it. The auction ended and I have sent the remote to the winner in Australia... Since then, my car is acting very weird during the night and I am recieving bills for using some communication satelites. ;o) sorry couldn't resist. >>> did the routine of putting key in drivers side door, unlocking (but not opening door) and then pressing the lock button 4-8 times. <<< I haven't heard about this routine before. |
