MG MGF Technical - Reverse CRUNCH

Hello

Just bought an MGF for the summer. The only problem seems that most of the time (not always) when i put the car into reverse there is a crunch noise. Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem and found a possible solution? I'm not pushing the gearstick down or pulling up when enguaging reverse (like you have to do on some cars)-should I be doing this?

Thanks
Malc

Nope, no pushing or pulling. On the f there is no synchromesh for reverse. I usually put it in 1st gear first, and then in reverse.

I'm like Johan. If I'm not in a tearing hurry I hold the clutch down for a couple of seconds and make sure that the engine is at tickover.

They all do that, Sir! :) You're supposed to leave the gear lever in neutral for a second before putting into reverse, but like Johan I always put it into 1st before reverse.

Thanks for bringing this up. I've only had my MG a few weeks and wondered what that crunch was when I put it in reverse.

Hmm I'll ignore that, lol! I doubt I'd make a mistake like that in my MG! Anyway like you said if I put it in 1st, first then reverse it doesn't crunch.

There's No Synchro on Reverse Gear on an MGF...

Emma,

<<I doubt I'd make a mistake like that in my MG!>>

I did and split the bumper. Cost me £250 to fix and paint. "I doubt I'd make the same mistake again" with everything crossed JIC.

HA HAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes they all do that ...the crunching that is....HA HAAAAAAAAAA

Neil

Yep the noise you hear is the cogs attached to the input side of the gearbox hitting the cogs on the output side of the gearbox.

Even with the cluch in there is a little turning force on the gearbox input, putting it into another gear 'stills' it temporaryly, so the cogs dont clash when you engauge reverse.

So how come, when I had a replacement gearbox under my years warranty that came with my 'used' F.
I no longer have any crunching on reverse. Has the replacement been upgraded?

Note; gearbox was replaced due to difficultly engaging 1st gear not 'crunching'.

Prolly has more drag than a run in box, or is fully filled with oil, so the effect is less.
