MG MGF Technical - Running rich

My F seems to be running rich.

Sooty exhaust pipes, sooty plugs, gurgling/popping sound at pipes, had to recently replace CAT, smell of petrol on idling etc.

There are no error codes coming up on my hand held reader and she seems to run fine otherwise.

I have new plugs, new coil packs, new fuel filter, new camshaft sensor, new cranshaft sensor and have checked all sensor connections.

Any ideas on what it could be. Do I REALLY need to pay over the odds for a T4?

Cheers

Faulty brown water temp sensor? That would make the ECU think the engine is cold and run rich all the time.......I think!
Tony

Thanks, I will try and check that out. Would that not show up on a fault reader though, or would it not think it is a fault as such?

>Would that not show up on a fault reader though

I think you refer to the water temperature gauge ?
If so, no it woun't cause that gets controlled by the black coloured sensor :)

As Tony said, may be the brown sensor. Wherein a faulty sensor also would result in high idle (at app. 1500 revs) .
Dieter

Yhanks Dieter,

Its a pleasure getitng advice from such a person.

Idle is perfect at about 750-800 all the time. Getting annoying as black sooty water is soiling my bumper form the exhausts .

Got MOT coming up soon too so would like to try and sort it in case it fails on emissions.

Can I just confirm the brown water temperature sender (or transducer)is the one I should change?

I got one form Rimmers today, but it was black (despite being labelled brown in the description). They checked my VIN etc and confirmed it must be the right part and has just changed colour.

Is it this whcih is likely to be faulty, and not one of the other coolant sensors?

Cheers.

Mind you in this weather, I wont be changing it soon anyway :(

PLEASE !! Can someone jujst confirm something.

Are ll the Temperature sensors (the one on top of the elbow, not the one tucked underneath) a brown colour.??

I have only ever seen brown ones or heard peopel talking about brown ones but mine ws a black one and a slighlty different shape/size. In fact I am convinced it is exactly the same as the black one underneath ????

DO later models have a black coolant temp sensor??

Thanks. I have changed mine over ot a new (smalelr) black one and it is still just burning fuel, in fact it smells worse.
I Brown

Not aware of any colour change on the coolant temperature sender, I bought one from a dealer recently and it was definitely brown. Sounds suspiciously like they've sent you the temperature gauge sender (the one tucked underneath) by mistake. As to why the original wasn't brown, that's a mystery. Perhaps possible the original was the wrong one too?

Thats all I neeed to know. I would not put it past the garage I used to fix my HJGF to have added the wrong one on the car, they are constantly ripping people off!! It has not been running right since around that time. MAybe they knew my CAT would fail , and buy it from them (they tried to charge me over 1000 pounds once for a complete exhaust system becuase they were certain they would damage the cat etc whilst replacing a downpipe!!!)

I have the brown one to, so I may just plug that in and see if it makes any difference

By the way the car is a very late model F with some parts from the TF. Do TFs use the brown one too?
