MG MGF Technical - Rust on boot lid
I have a 2000 Mk 2 F. There is rust appearing on the seam between the boot lid top part and the bakc (to the right of the high level brake light). A friend says that it's "seam bleed" and coming from the seam behind the paint. Has anyone else had this problem and should it be covered by the corrosion warrantee (before I visit the dealer). |

Keith I think you'll find the corrosion warranty is only valid if your service record was stamped every year and the corrosion has caused perforation of the metal. The boot lid has a number of holes (four from memory)in the channels underneath, and these should be blocked with blind grommets to stop water entering the lid. Chris |

SF, this was a mod added after the '98 cars I think (as both mine and another '98 didn't have them fitted as standard)! Took me bloody ages to work out where the water in the boot was coming from when I was washing the car. |

Surely these holes have two uses, firstly to assist feeding the wiring to the boot-lock, light and brake light and secondly, the rear holes jig the spoiler bolt holes. The plugs are only cosmetic. The TF probably does not have them as MGR would save 9p on each car by not fitting them. Keith, you need to check the boot for dampness as this rust is finding a weak spot in a damp area that should be dry. The archives will tell you where to look for leaks into the boot. Geoff F. |

Keith, I have the exact same problem on my boot lid (only on the left not the right). Mines a 97 F though so I would expect a little rust somewhere. It is getting quite bad now though so I need to get sorted. |

Thanks Phil, One thing I forgot to mention is that the top of my boot has always been a slightly different shade of red to the rest of the car, as if it was resprayed before it was delivered new. I've lived with that because I had a previous F which was replaced by Rover as the paint was peeling off at 6 months old, so didn't want to get into having panels resprayed. I think I'll try to clean up the seam and treat it with a bit or cure rust before painting it myself (it's solar red, so not too much of a problem matching the colour). Rover will probalby squirm out of it because one service was not carried out by a Rover dealer (as they couldn't fit me in for over a month). |

Might be worth popping along to a local bodyshop. Ask around and see if you can get some recommendations for your area. I can't imagine it would be an expensive repair. |
