MG MGF Technical - S2000 Engine start wiring?

Hi Guys,

I've just bought a Honda Start button and feeling quite brave thought I'd undertake the task of fitting myself.

However, reality has now set in and I've remembered that I am about as good with electrics as blondes are with quantum physics!

I've gone right through the archives and found loads of threads relating to this but the only problem I keeping finding is the inconsistincy with regards to which wire to splice from under the dash!

The favourite seems to be the black with a white stripe but others say the white/red one and another says the yellow/white etc etc etc...

So basically, if someone who has done it could possibly tell me the wiring details they used, preferably in baby language so I can understand it, I would be extremely grateful!

Many thanks!

Kris.

Sorry chaps,

I've got to bounce this as dying to fit the button and before I go chopping wires, I could really do with a bit of reassurance as to what wire I'm butchering! :-)
Kris

Kris, I'd love to help, but I haven't performed this modification. I would be keen on getting some step by step instructions for the website to aid others in the future though - so if you have a digital camera handy...

I seem to recall that Dave Morris went through all this recently (thread in archive). Small image of the necessary modifications though - difficult to see what needed to be done.

I think that Pascal had better images on his website (sorry, I've lost the URL). Try the XPF archives.

Kris,
I have a starter button working, I'll drop you a mail. It's not from a Honda though but it might help answer your query.

did this mod 2 weeks ago with a savage starter button it is indeed the black wire with a white stripe. the other wire i just connected to a live ,the ciggie wire. what i did kris was to set it all up before spliceing the wires by just touching the black wire with the white stripe at the point it connects to the white block,(you can just see the spade end connector touch this with the wire and tape in position)and the other to the live, pressed the button and it starts !! it was in my case a live to the common, and the above blk with white stripe to the normally open connection on the button. two wires.i,m not very good at explaining things so if this doesn,t make sense send me a email and i will ask the wife to type it out as i am still on 2 finger typeing !!!

I,ve also got pascals instructions from the archives his was for the honda button ,it does indeed mention other wire colours but i think these was for the button to light up,mine does but it stays lit as it is connected to a constant live ,i think pascals info had the button lit untill the engine started, then went out but i couldn,t figure this out. Again kris if it is of any help i can post them to you or ask my wife to send the link. mel....

LEGEND!! :-)

It makes sense. Many thanks.

As simple as it sounds now, I hadn't thought of just temporarily touching the cables and trying it before hacking away!
This is definitely a much better idea!

What year is your model as I now am led to believe that the wiring colours changed sometime around 2000 and this is why people have different opinions. Mine's a MY2001 Trophy.

Many thanks again.

hi Kris , mines a 1997 R reg so you could be right about the colours being different.i was also led to believe that i could find out which wire it was by using one of those cheapo circuit testers ( the ones with the bulb in the handle and a bulldog clip on the othrt end) clip on to a metal part on the car,and touch which wire you believe it to be,when your key is in the no 2 position the tester will light up if the wire is correct. I really am no expert all of the above is info i have collected, but it seems to be another way of testing which wire ,good luck Kris hope it all goes well...Mel...........
