MG MGF Technical - Screw in tyre

This is what happened to my Freelander the other day; it has gone completely flat and is about an inch in from the side through the raised/ highest point of tread.

Has anyone any experience of having holes repaired; is it safe and can most tyre places repair?

I know this does not relate to my MGF however I assume the response would be the same.

I've had a couple of screws removed from o/s rear and patched by my local tyre people (Tyrespot, Darlington) without problems. Both had gone in through the centre groove. They couldn't do anything about the 4" by 1" diameter aluminium rod that made a big bang when it did the same.
You might find more in the archives as I think we've had this discussion a few times.

Hi there my Dad had it done on hid Land Rover Disco about 3 years ago on a 3 mounth old tyer it was fine un till he was go down the motorway fast lane at 80 and had a blow out from the repair. He got to the hard sholder with out taking any one out with him and changed the wheel. I think this just shows that it is better to spend a bit of mouny and a new tyer than going for a repair and also that the last model of Discos had grate brakes and tracton control.

Cheers

certain parts of the tyre can be repaired. This is normally the point of road contact section and excludes the side tyre wall. A proper tyre depot will have a chart to show you which sections of tyre they are allowed to repair. A whole caused by a screw or nail can be plugged.

I think it is the centre 75% that can be fixed so you are probably outside that on a tyre of any decent width. If it can be and is properly fixed it should fine as the sueing culture would put the frightners on anything dodgy. Good luck, just had to buy a new tyre for my SAAB - £130 !!

I had a 4" nail removed from the centre of one of my rear tyres during the Summer. It cost £18 for the repair, including new valve and re-balancing. This same tyre was used on a track day at Pembrey (and is still on the car).
