MG MGF Technical - Seat Belt Light

Hi everyone.

Can anybody tell me how to replace the bulb for the seatbelt warning light between the rev counter and the speedo?

Complete removal of the instrument binnacle, unless you have skinny hands like me and can reach behind once the binnacle cowl is removed. Fiddly but not too tricky, I recall seeing the removal procedure very well detailed in Andy's Scarlet Fever rebuild site, but can't find the URL sorry - anyone?

Cheers Mike,
How do you remove the cowl???

Not had the car long so I'm a bit of a novice with the

Still trying to find that URL... worth you searching the archives, might find a link somewhere

The cowl is screwed in 2 places on the top edge, and IIRC two on the lower edge (undignified posture required to get to them). Remove the cowl and you'll be able to see the screws holding the instruments in place, remove these and pull the unit forward gently. Tricky bit now - you need to reach behind through the gap and work off the plug connectors. Getting them back on once you've replaced the bulb is the real challenge ;-)

Might help if you prise out the central air vents (blunt screwdriver and gentle leverage), this should allow you to get a second hand behind the instruments.

Good luck

See dash 1 & 2 sections.

It's a fiddely job and you need to be careful not to break anything.

How to do it, (from workshop manual)

Make the SRS system safe. (Best to disconnect battery and wait for 10 mins. (make sure you have your radio code)

1. Remove steering column nacelle. (steering column cover) 3 screws hold that onto the steering column.
2. Remove 4 screws securing instrument cowl to
fascia.
3. Release cowl and disconnect multiplug from
panel lamp dimmer.
4. Release dimmer from cowl.
5. Remove cowl.
6. Remove 4 screws securing instrument pack to
fascia.
7. Release instrument pack from fascia.
8. Disconnect speedometer cable.
9. Release 3 multiplugs and bulb holder from
pack.
10. Remove instrument pack.
11. Remove 2 screws securing brackets to
instrument pack and collect brackets.
12. Release bulb holder from casing and cables
from 2 casing clips.
13. Remove instrument illumination housing.
14. Remove screw securing cover to casing and
remove cover.
15. Remove warning light panel.
The bulb is 2nd from the top.

For "evaluation" purposes, you can download the complete mgf workshop manual from here: http://kidlogis.com/mgpassion/mgpassion/documentation.php

Right click and "save target as"
Caution large file, may need fastspeed internet connection.

Bloody Hell Branko!
That sounds like a nightmare
I might just wait until the service and get them to do it!

Mind you, it's a holiday Monday here this weekend and I'm at a loose end. So the screw drivers just might come out of the box!

Thanks for the link

Dave,

LOL, sorry to scare you.
It's not as bad as it seems. :-)
Its just a step by step action. "Steady as she goes"

Do a search in the achieves as well. Lots of info.

This whole process of getting to the instrument cluster would be so much easier if the dashtop cowel was designed in a way to easily remove it, that way giving access to the instrument panel.
I modified mine (due to broken clips) so that the 3 fastening screws are accessable from the inside of the cowel.

(Saab 9000's can have the whole dashtop removed in a few mins and give access to the dash area from the top down.)

Do you have the relevent pages from the work shop manual.?
It does make it a lot easier with pics.

Cheers,
Branko.

Branko

Yeah
Thanks Branco.
Just got in from work and downloaded them to my laptop.

Had a quick look, but wouldn't it be so much easier if you could get at the whole lot from underneath via the area holding the fuses!!
Oh well nothing is ever that easy!

Off to the Gym for a couple of hours then back to see who Chelsea (FC) are going to face in the final of the Champions League.

Thanks for your help

Ill let you know how I get on at the weekend
