MG MGF Technical - Seat-belt Pre-tensioners

Is it OBVIOUS when the seat-belt pre-tensioners activate?? Do they make a noise...a smell...light a dashboard lamp...or anything??

Is it possible to "fire" them by using one's body-weight (while strapped in) to lock the belts??

The handbook says they operate in conjunction with the airbag. Does this mean that they will only "fire" if the airbag deploys??

I am no expert but as I understand it the 'tensioners' work in conjunction with the air bags so you will be aware when they have activated - I am also told by those that have experienced it that there is a very strong smell of explosives afterwards!

yes all of these
The only go off with rapid deceleration (and there is no big brake kit that can do this quite so hard as you need - Mike? ;-)

I have a Y plate 2001 MGF that was recalled shortly after buying it to have the pre-tensioners checked. I believe there may have been problems with some of them activating when they shouldn't have.

I imagine that you'll know when it goes off as you should feel it pull you to the seat?!

I also have a 2001 car and I was told by the previous owned that the pre-tensioners went off one day - sounded like a shotgun with a terrible smell of cordite. When he took it to the garage he was told that the car should have been recalled. Both sides replace at no cost.
