MG MGF Technical - Seat Re

Got some new 1/2 leather seats to replace my tatty cloth seats in my 98 MGF. Really struggling fitting these, even with a guide I found on the net. Any advice / anyone know who could do this for me? Cheers!

BH,

If they have come complete with the runners, it should be pretty straight forward with a TORX bit and socket set, although I did mangle one of my seat bolts and had to drill and tap it out!!!

Any competent garage mechanic should be able to do it for you in under an hour.

be sure the battery is diconnected for 20 minutes before starting the job, to make sure the air bag connectors under the seats are safe to unplug!

If your not comfortable doing it yourself give Matt a call at Beech Hill Garage about 5 mins from the Brewery. I sure they would be happy to help.

As Sam says, if a complete seat assembly with pre-tensioners (and the loom connectors are correct for your car), then the task honestly could not be easier. Push the seats all the way back to access the front two Torx bolts (T20 IIRC) and then run them all the way forward to access the rear two. Release the pretensioner wiring loom (hence the need to discharge the battery for a while). Unbolt, remove and replace.

Where are you having difficulty? We should be able to help?

Thanks for your help guys, very useful!

Couple of questions:

i) Do I need a T20 or a T50 bit?

ii) Not sure what the 'runners' are? if my new seats do not have them can I not use the old?

did phone garage (used to take my midget there) but looking at about 2 labour, seems expensive for an 'easy' job...

sorry if seem like stupid questions, am new to this.

Cheers!

T50 for sure, but I can't help with the runners!

Memory rather rusty - it was years since I last messed around with the seats! LOL Yup, T50 sounds right :o)

Regarding the runners - if you've bought the seats complete (along with the pretensioners), I would think that you have the seat runners too. Is the fore-aft adjustment handles present under the front seat squabs?

If your new seats don't have them (I would think that they have - they're usually sold this way), then swapping the seats over to the existing runners ought to be possible. I can't really help beyond that comment as I've not tried...

Understand now, thanks guys! will have a go at this over the weekend....

Please note the seat belt pretensioners are Pyrotechnics and you need to disconnect the battery prior to disconnecting these as any sparks could potentialy trigger. Manual I believe recommends allowing at least 30 mins from disconnecting the battery, some people recommend leaving overnight.
