MG MGF Technical - Servicing

I had my 36k service done last November. Although the car had only done 31k it had covered 12k in about 8 months previous. In the last year I have only covered 6k, so the car is currelty on 37k. The service book shows I should be servicing the car at 48k or 48 months. The car is neither of these but it has been 12 months (ish) since the last service.

I guess what I am trying to say here is:

Does the car need to be serviced every 12 months even if it below both the age and mileage limits set out in the service schedule?

hi Rog,i have similar circumstance as you my car is now 3 yr old, see my thread 24k service it says in my service book 2yr or 24k so iv'e gone for 24k, which im'e having done next mon, still 400 mile from 24k then, but want a service done even though she's running great.Dave.

You should always have the car serviced (or DIY) at least once a year and follow the advice from the hand book or from the service agent.

DC Morris!!

Does that mean you are having you second service although your car is three years old?

I am just worried that my servie schedule will be wrong if I dont have a stamp every 12 months. I will happily service it myself, but dont want to pay £200 for no reason!

Ted,

Thanks for that, the handbook isnt really that helpful in this instance, and I am loathed to contact my local helpful(un) MGR dealer, as I am pretty sure the answer will be yes, without thinking about it.

Hi Roger,im'e doing as service booklet says, had 3,000 mile coutesy dealer check, then main service at 12,000k,then have gone for it says in my book 24k or 24 month so as do low mileage im'e going for 24k service, now the next thing in my book says 36k or 3yr,now as it says mileage or months am i interprating it right or notas Ted's comments got me thinking now Dave.

Dave,

The miles or time guideline is based on whichever comes first - i.e. 36K or 3 yrs means either

a) you service it at 3 years old even if it's done less than 36K

b) you service it at 36K miles even if it's not 3 years old.

In your case it sounds like you have situation a).

Dave'thanks looks like iv'e read service book wrong, good job having one next week,so i guess my next service will be same time next year, and every year after ect, even though i will be nowhere near 36k,and car will be 4yr old nov 2003.thanks for clearing up my confusion ps thanks also Ted, Dave.

DC,

Remember things like brake fluid, oil (to a lesser degree), cam belts and anti-freeze degrade over time as well as with use, hence the 'whichever happens first' applied to the service schedule. Also, not all items (e.g. brake fluid) are replaced at every service.

Company cars and the like can be on their 3 year service by the end of the first year, so generally the mileage guidelines are normally for them and your high mileage punter. The yearly ones are for the rest of us. Will probably have done 5K this year myself between services this year, and the next one's the big 5.
