MG MGF Technical - Shake Rattle n mmmmmm

Lo' all,

haven't been here for a while so I hope you're all fine & dandy! I should try coming here more often than when the car has a prob but I know some one will be able to help me.

The F had it's 5 year service & MOT in May (Burnden Park Rover did the service & Horners the MOT.) No probs since except for the usual squeaks & rattles. But over the last week the clutch has developed an awful lot of travel, checked the hydraulic fluid & it's down so we will replace that & see what happens there & more concerning, the engine has developed a horrible rattle between 2500 & 3000 rpm.

First off, should the hydraulic fluid in the clutch be checked @ the 5 year service point & second what is the cause of the horrid noise? & is it terminal or can it be fixed (preferably cheaply becuase I have just moved into my first house & the last thing I need is a heafy garage bill!!)

Thanks in advance

Having read the message below, which appears to be the smae symptoms at least, I should also add that the oil & water levels seem to be OK.

Is the clutch slave cylinder failing? Mind you, I would expect that the pedal would be hard to depress and the gears sometimes tricky to change if that were the case.
Rob Bell

When the clutch slave cyclinder failed on my ZT recently the clutch was actually no harder to depress, there was just a lot of free play at the top of the pedal travel, with the clutch disengaging just above the floor. It became a tad tricky to change gears though...
Mister T

Have topped the clutch fluid up & the clutch is much better, but the rattle is still there at 2500 - 3000 rpm. I think it will just have to be monitored.

Thanks for the info as always

Re the rattling noise between 2500 - 3000 rpm. we had to pop over to Bolton last night so whilst we were there we paid a visit to Burnden Park Motors (who did our five yar service for us) & had some one have a listen to our rattle for us. Turns out it was a broken oil filler bracket, just needs welding, which we can have some one do for us at work. Phew!

On the other hand, he did feel that the engine seemed quite 'lumpy' & sluggish; which the other half has been saying for ages; but he wasn't really able to offer up a suitable explanation or solution. He was pretty sure that it wasn't a sign that the engine was about to implode but the best he could suggest was that something was possibly on the way to failing, but even hooking the car up to a diagnostic program wouldn't pinpoint the fault without some educated guesswork. So that's what I am asking you guys for ;-)

Any suggestions for probable causes & solutions would be much appreciated

Cheers

Is it a 1.8i - if so ignition leads and/or distributer(SP!) cap may be on the way out? Rattly dipstick has come up on a few cars recently, at least it's cheaper to fix than a new cat or flexi pipe!
Tony

Yup 1.8i! I best check that the above aer coverd on my AA policy then!!

Thanks
