MG MGF Technical - Silicone Brake Fluid
I need to renew my brake and clutch fluid soon. On my old Triumph I used to use silicone brake fluid successfully for many years with no problems at all. Can silicone fluid be used in the MGF and with ABS braking systems? Cheers Don |

Don, DOT 5 cannot be used with ABS and is not a performance fluid. Paul |

Although DOT5 cannot be used DOT 5.1 is Glycol based and is suitable for modern systems. The advantage is that it has a higher boiling point and so has an improved efficiency if the car regularly experiences heavy braking ie Track days.... Tim |

Changed the Brake fluid today, easy job with no problems. Used Dot 4 Lucas Brake fluid from MG Rover in the end. :-) don |

Sensible move Don - DOT5 silicon fluid is not brilliant for a modern sports car, and besides to use it you'd need to change all the seals! |

DOT 5 (silicone) fluid should not be used in a vehicle fitted with ABS unless originally specified. Dot 5 is not hygroscopic, consequently it can lead to a water build up within the ABS pump. This can eventually lead to the internal components rusting and, ultimately, failure of the pump. Ralph |
