MG MGF Technical - Skimmed Head
I email MG Rover to enquire whether it is possible to skim the head of my 97 VVC. The reply I got from MG Rover was, "The normal skim limit can be applied i.e. no more than 0.20mm but the difficulty will be in retiming the camshafts, you will need to purchase approximately £650 worth of camshaft assemblies." Do you think that new camshaft assemblies would be needed or could the old assemblies be used? Has anyone had head rebuilt @ a lesser cost for parts? Ron |

new cams are not required, reuse old ones unless damaged. mike ps. see article in MGW. |

Ron, The VVC head is OK to skim, I have skimmed up to .5mm from them with no problems, the difference that a .20mm skim makes to the cam timing is less than 1 degree and as such is insiginificant. You certainly dont need new assemblies (even if you did I have 3 new sets here at £75 a complete head set). The head is tricky to strip and re-assemble but bot impossible, there are some tricks you can play to minimise the work needed and if you want to do it I can advise. If you think you are being ripped off, I can strip the head, skim it to your requirements and re-assemble it complete with re-aligning the VVC mechs for £175. I have rebuilt many of them. Dave |

Sounds like a good deal to me, Ron! |

Wish I can get the same deal David! :-) If I ever get a problem, would you be able to help me out, i.e. sending you the head, etc. Or buy a head off you that is ported etc. Are you willing to send it to New Zealand? Thanks David. Regards, Hanah (I've been reading that k-series engine site for last 2 years.. with much interest, but finding it too difficult to do it here) |

Hanah, I've sent heads to Malaysia, Japan, HK, and Australia so New Zealand wouldnt be a problem if you can afford the freight... I have a large stock of good VVC and MPi heads here.. Dave |

Thanks, Mike, Dave & David. I need info because I'm considering suing garage for carrying out work unnecessarily, I.E. saying the head was cracked when it wasn't, then fitting a new head (& head bolts?? were they needed??) I've now had it hot pressure tested & passed. I've contacted Trading Standards Office they say i've got a good case, just need hard copy from an expert/Rover technician relaying the answers you've given me. Ron |

You do need new bolts because they are stretch bolts that should be replaced |
