MG MGF Technical - Smelly Trophy Interior!

All of a sudden the interior of my Trophy 160 has developed an oily/petrol smell. I know there has been a petrol smell problem on earlier F's (something to do with the tank breathe system), but I thought this had been overcome on the Mk2 cars (mine is a Nov 2001 51 reg car). It had been fine until yesterday, but it seems to be getting worse each time I get in the car.

It's a strange smell - not just like petrol, but a sort of oil/petrol combined, almost sweet smell (difficult to describe smells really!), and it is worst after the car has been standing for a couple of hours, so it's not happening when the engine gets hot (or not that I've noticed anyway)

I'll be getting the dealer to have a look at it next week, but I just wondered if anyone else has experienced this.

Cheers

>I'll be getting the dealer to have a look at it next week,

That's fine :)

Oil smells different from coolant or fuel.
No recommendation possible without clear analysis.

Oil smell seams impossible.

Fuel smell is reasonable cause all the former changes have been more *quality assuring cosmetic* then really changes.
The dealer has written instructions on how to measure *fuel smell* from under the car with his standard equipment. To be measured through the drain hole at the end of the tunnel below the fuel tank. Ask for this test if you assume fuel smell.

Coolant smell would be possible due to a leak at the heater. Is anything wet in the footwell ?

Coolant has a sweet smell. Different from clutch smell / and also from fuel smell.

Dieter's reply seems quite valid to me.

Good luck!

Thanks guys.
It is definitely a sweet smell, and also seems to be coming from the front of the car, around the footwell/dashboard area. I'm now convinced that it is a coolant leak, as I'm sure it doesn't smell like petrol.
It's going to the dealer tonight, so I'll poitn out your comments.
Thanks again

Paul,

If you think it's coolant, do check your expansion bottle before you drive off - the last thing you want is air getting into your cooling system - three nasty letters spring to mind, the first one being H.

Oooops, that's vital, of course, but don't overfill.
