MG MGF Technical - soft top wont go down

soft top is not opening just stops half way down always been a bit tricky usually have to pull up and down a few times before it goes fully down . any ideas .mel.

Probably a hood "lock up" basically there's a bar on the roof that needs to be pulled towards the back of the car when you lower the hood if this happens and then the hood should go all the way down as expected. HTH.

what oil did u use to lub the hood? mine locks up and iff i pull the second bar forward when lowering it goes down ok. ( i look a prat while faffin with it tho so would be nice to cure it)

is this an acknoledged fault ( by Rover) cos if it is has any one got a new car free of charge?

There was a hood recall on a batch of TF's so straps could be fitted to prevent the hood material being pinched when lowered. This also seems to have cured the hood lock-up problem. Don't see any reason why these straps can't be fitted to other F/TF's as the design is all the same.

b d nichols three in one oil i used ,good for instant lube but will have to do regulary .i also pushed the hood folds down with my left hand as putting down as a recent coat of renovo had stiffend the fabric ,i think this was part to blame .ps renovo is the dogs tackle ,buy the larger bottle and it will do 3 coats .

On a serious note - Sue's comment about the retro-fit straps is a good one. My TF had them from new and the hood opens/closes much more easily than my previous F did. Also helps prevent the hood getting pinched in the frame and making those little holes.

Search the archive for phrases like TF HOOD RECALL or very similar. The straps cost less than £5 IIRC and take about 10 minutes to fit. Well worth getting.

I fitted the straps to my F and it's totally cured the lockups. Part number is DJE000010.
