MG MGF Technical - something loose underneath?

Hi all
I got this bad cracking noise from the front end,not sure if its related to a loose movement from underneath the excelerator pedal area.
This movement happens when you go around a sharp corner or roudabout, you can feel something move one way then back again?
Took it down to my local garage today and we put the mg on the ramp, checked the usual anti roll bar bushes and track rod ends but they seemed ok.
The car also went through its mot recently (2 months ago with no probs)but forgot to tell the guy about the underneath movement.
Can anyone help???

Forgot to say that the F was about 50mm too low on the front end (previous owner)until last week when i had her pumped up to the regulation 368mm.
Maybe this has put too much stress etc on the front bits and something had to give way over a period of time, but what???

Hi Tony,

Am I right in presuming the noise occurs when the car is cornering to the right only? And presumably only when the cornering force produces 'lift' on the drivers side? Worth unbolting the lower end of the shock absorber to check its performing adequately, and look for any free play in the top mounting. Then, I'd suggest having a look at the subframe mounts, if the ride height has been too close to the ground then these could be a bit battered. Next would be wishbone bushes, check the torque of the mounting bolts.

Not to overlook the other possibilities, have you checked for anything loose in the front compartment - a wheel brace flopping around could feasibly produce these symptoms...

Hi Mike
First thing i checked was the obvious front compartment spare wheel etc but its not them.
I'll give it a few weeks and see if it gets any worse before i check the anti roll bar bushes and shock mounts.
Thanks for your input

If you have an early F it could be the welds on either side of the crossbar under the dashboard. Lots of info about it in the older years archives.

Also check shock shafts for wear, mine used to creak...

Check the drop-on either end of the Anti Roll bar. They can break - as Rob will testify - resulting in a knocking as the end of the ARB moves about.

This does sound like the problem that Colin had, I agree Steve - see http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/group2/suspension/ARB_bush_replacement.htm

drop-on ??? I meant drop-links
