MG MGF Technical - Sounds like a sewing machine!

Hi!

Got a 2001 MGf 1.8i. It is used daily for work
and leisure and has caused me no worries so far.

Yesterday, when visiting customers, I noticed that
when I started the car up, the engine sounded like
it had been replaced by a sewing machine, such was
the noise. At other times, I would start it up and
it would sound like the normal taught engine it was.
No problems with accelaration or pulling away through
the gears; this happened about 6 times out of about
30 starts. Checked the oil (fine) and water (fine,no
hint of mayonaise!)

Any ideas?

Mine used to make a ticking noise when not used regular (a weekend car).
The noise went and has not come back when i used it more often and put a better quality oil in car.
If it is due a service (a good oil change) this may help.
I,m sure some of the experts on here will advise better than me ,but a "ticking" noise that goes when the car warms up seems to be quite common and not much to worry about. One of the regulars suggested a good hard drive of the car (when all warmed up correctly ) which i did and although it sounds odd the car was much quieter with one long hard drive rather than the pottering about that it was getting.
Hope this helps .Mel..

What does a sewing machine sound like?

Not the sort of noise a bloke should be familiar with surely!

Bill,

I think we need a bit more information on the noise. Its it like a ticking or clicking which increases as the revs become higher ?

Did you take the engine cover off and see if you could determine where the noise comes from ?

I belive (but sure somewill confirm) that the VVC has noises that come from the hydraulic tappets and there are verious bits in archive about adding different oil etc.. but yours you says is the standard 1.8 so its not that.

Are you sure is not a lead rubbing on the alternator or something ?

Hi! Messrs. Johnson, Beet & Brian

Thanks for your replies, but since I posted this, my
"f" has been perfect, sounds ok, accelarates ok
and touch wood, no problems. It is due up for a
winter check-up (60k service 4,000 miles ago) and I will mention it to my local (worth his weight in gold)
MG garage proprietor.

Mr. Beet. I do know how to operate a sewing machine,
ironing board, oven, hoover, etc. No, I am not a new
man, in fact, I feel very old, but it does keep the
other half very happy and concerned for my welfare -
perhaps that's why we have had four children!

A happy ending :0)))
