MG MGF Technical - Speedo

I ve had a problem with the needle on my speedo since getting the car. What happens is when the car is moving the needle doesnt move up smoothly, it shakes around like crazy, as if there is alot of play on the cable. For example, this morning coming to work i was doing around about 5 MPH in a jam and the needle was bouncing between 0 and about 15mph. This has happened since i got the car (1997 mpi) but is getting progressively worse.

Has anyone else had this problem, is it a case of having to change the speedo cable?
Thanks Gary.

Yeh, I have that problem too, although not as bad as yours by the sound of it. I just live with it, though I will look at the problem if it gets any worse.

Gary,
I had this same problem. I cured it by re routing the speedo cable so that it didn't have any sharp bends in it. Check under the plastic cover in the front bonnet.

Also see the faq.

Cable is in multiple sections.
Simply twising one of the connectors can even up the friction and solve your erratic speedo. Easiest one to get at is under the bonnet under the black plastic cover.
Or, as Bruce says, re-route it.

Sounds to me like someone has "corrected" the mileage on your vehicle.

Dont know how you worked that one out?!
G.C

You whip the cable out in order to gain access to the clocks... "direct" method as listed.

You could, but as this is a common problem with cars with known historys - I would say that you assertion is like saying 'it has rear tyres on the wear limit, so the owner must have spent a lot of time doing doughnuts'
