MG MGF Technical - Speedo wobble

Hi All

I know this subject has been raised previously.

I have a 2002 MGF Trophy which has a wobbly/flicking speedo.

The flicking happens as I accelerate, when readings vary from 0 to 150mph. If I maintain a steady speed the speedo reads true but will flick occasionally, usually if I apply pressure to the accelerator peddle.

I have had the sender unit replaced on the gearbox/engine. No change.

Not being technical I could do with advice on the "bits" in the frontend under the cover. I assume there must be a "receiving" unit that is connected to the speed.

I have obtained a workshop manual, so I have some reading to do.

Would appreciate any comments re above.

Feel it may be a loose connection, when I purchased the car and drove it down from Aberdeen to Manchester, back in Feb, the speedo was fine and steady. The problem started soon after.

Hi

The car was a company car, driven by the son of the owner.

I obtained copy invoices re servicing and actually went into the dealer garage to obtain the service history of the car, the dealer gave me a print out of all work done on the vehicle. All documents tied in with the look and condition of the vehicle.

Have you thought of trying a tighter pair of swimming trunks? At the very least speedo wobble could be embarassing. :-)

Very funny!

On a 2002 model the speedometer drive should be fully electronic. On pre-2001 models, worn drive cables usually only result in a small sustained flicker.

If the sender has been replaced the two possibilities are a wiring fault between the sender and the instrument panel, or a fault in the instrument itself. At a guess I'd say the latter is more likely.

If your car has the adjustable steering column then the procedure to remove the instrument pod is less involved than the manual might suggest, in that the wheel doesn't have to be removed - lowering the column as far as it will go gives enough room (just!) to get the unit out. Perhaps taking it and a wiring diagram (in the manual) to an auto electrician is the answer; they should be able to simulate the input from the sender unit and that will prove or disprove any fault in the instrument itself.

As for mileage, that's recorded on the engine ECU, so if you replace the speedo unit the odometer will still give the same reading as the old one.

Hi Mike

Thanks for the comments.

The car was first registered in 5/02 the vin number is 2D529910. Mark 1.

I think the speedo is therefore fully electronic, which proble explains why I can't locate a speedo cable under the bonnet as shown in the work shop manual.

Need a new manual as the copy I have doesnt seem to cover this version only goes upto 2000MY

Thanks again
