MG MGF Technical - SRS system disable and test!!.

How Hard/easy is it to disable the SRS system??.

For several months now have had the usual problem where the SRS light comes on while driving and a quick fiddle with the plug under the drivers seat would cure it (for a while anyway).

In recent weeks has got worse so decided to replace the plug!!, however still the same, ok for a day or two then on comes the light again!!!.

Thought then must be wiring to the plug so re-did from where it comes through the floor to the plug itself,...yet still the same!!.

Its not the lead going to the seat belt pre-tensioner as these have been replaced and the problem happened on the old ones!!.

Do the airbags/tensioners still work when the light is on (could I just remove the bulb)??. :o)

Is the wiring from the loom to these plugs just for continuity??, ie if I linked out the loom wiring to each seat in turn would this kid the system in thinking the circuit was made and extinguish the light, or would it set the SRS/aibags off??.

TIA

SRS system disable would not in my opinion be a good idea. If its the same as my last car the srs system activates the gas canisters in the seat belts that tension them in the event of a collishion and with out them it could make a air bag if fitted lethel. The other thing being if you gave a passenger a lift and they were hurt in a collishion due you cutting the srs wires a man slaugter charge would soon follow along with the insureance being non valid.

I for one would would be pretty pissed if you killed my daugher/wife/son/ mother ect to save a few ££££££'s

if you have so litle disregard for your own safty please dont inflict it on to unwarey passengers.

dont mean to sound a pompus tw*t but having a freind killed by some idiot who disconected the abs system on his car and then couldn't stop in a emergency situation dose kind to make you pretty vocal on such issues. Im pretty sure my freinds kids woiuld have gladly paid the £210 for the ABS system had they not have been 2 years old, and after all it was only a lift back from work.......what could be safer....

hehe I will do when I recover from the live 8. I hate electrical problems, especialy intermitent ones.

back to being comfortably numb till sleep cometh.

Got exactly the same on SWMBO MG-R 25. Tried various things, booking into MG-R dealer for testbook investigation.
Really drives you mad.

Mark,
a common cause of the SRS light coming on is a faulty "rotary coupler". That's some device around the steering column to wire the airbag unit to the SRS loom... (you could also imagine some kind of machine helping single Rotary Club members find their half... but no).
I've had this fault on my previous F, and it has been regulary reported on this board for years....

I don't know if this helps in your case, because fiddling with the SRS plug under the seat would not be supposed to change something if the rotary coupler was the cause...

I've been told that id the SRS light is on, the system will not work.

I agree with Fabrice - I'd be suspicious of the rotary coupler Mark - although the fact that the fault could be 'fixed' by playing with the plug under the seat is pretty odd...

Testbook will provide some hints as to likely causes (will have sensor faults logged).

Thanks!!, I did think the rotary coupler, but light allways went out ok after the usual fiddle with the plug under the drivers seat!.
As I have now rewired this and the problem is still there, it could be other seat, coupler or passenger airbag!!.
This was my idea of linking each part of the system out, so by a process of elimination find which has the fault!!.

May have to try the dealers but dont know of any local as they all closed when MGR went!!!.
