MG MGF Technical - Stalling

I've just had the 5yr service completed with the cam belt and timing belts changed.

I'm not technical (hence the post), but the car revs at 900rpm (as is usual) but I keep stalling it (v. embarrassing!!) and it's hard to maintain 'normal clutch control' - and no it's not my driving or anything else!

I know this sounds daft and I probably just need to get used to it, but is this normal after a 5 yr service?

Thanks

This is not normal so I would take it abck to the garage for them to fix. The diagnosis would almost certainly imply that the timing is out and bearing in mind that you have just had the cam belt changed this sounds plausible. Without getting too technical if the belt is one tooth out on the pulley then then exhaust cam is out of sequence and after a run the car will stall at traffic lights, junctions where ever. This IS WRONG Another more serious reason could be an incorrectly adjusted tensioner if not set correctly the belt can jump even more teeth and that is V V bad. Rob and I know how difficult it is to set the tensioner but I now have a fantastic technique to do it in a matter of moments rather than hours...

Hopefully it is the former not the latter. Get it to the garage ASAP. Better still call the garage and tell them your fears even send them a copy of my post and get them to collect the car from you and give you a loan car for the inconvenience. You obviously have spent a lot of money with them for the 5 year sevice you deserve the job to be done correctly...

When the garage re-tension the belt if you hear a steaky/chirpy noise coming from the drivers side of the engine then they have over tightened the tensioner.... and again not particularly good. Don't let them tell you that it'll go away in time as this will stretch the cam belt, not good. Hope this gives you a bit of ammunition to contact your dealer.

Emma, how does the car drive through the remainder of the rev-range? Does it feel as though it pulls through the gears as it did before the work was performed on your car?
Rob Bell

I've re booked it back into the garage (earliest they can do is next week). It sounds very ropey and the drive isn't improving, but hopefully once the garage sort it then it'll be ok.

I have to say I was reluctant to have a five year service mainly because the car has a very low mileage 32k, but I guess it's time rather than distance that wears/fatigues belts.

Thanks for all your advice

You were right to get the belt changed, as you say it is dependent on time not mileage.

I assume that the car also has a lumpy idle.

Let us know what the garage say.....I would have thought that a problem like this deserved there soonest attention and not in a weeks time....Grrr. Whatever happened to customer service....!?

Under no circumstances should you have to pay any money, for the inconvenience and bringing into question their mechanical skill they ought to give you a partial refund for letting the car off there premises in that condition.

Just my two penny worth....

My friend had a car that did that (not an F) and it just needed the timing adjusting - its quite a simple thing to do and hopefully this may solve it - good luck!
