MG MGF Technical - Start button
Been looking through the archives about starter buttons. What I have read the way to do this would be as follows: if the start button is over 5amps I would not need a relay. To wire it in, one terminal connects to a power source that only comes on when the key is turned to the two position, e.g. cigarette lighter. The other terminal is connected to the ignition wire (the black wire with the white stripe) press the button (A push to make button) and the car will start "seems too easy". Have I read it wrong? Also another quote I saw was that the current only peaked at 0.2A, so does this mean I could use a start button with a one amp rating and still have no relay ?? Thanks all P.S. I know buggar all about car electrics. |

I think that I recall that thread - there was an error in the current calculations: in fact the current draw through the ignition switch is very low. Low enough, in fact, to avoid needing a supplimentary relay. I haven't done any research into this modification (not for me thanks), but many others have, and hopefully they'll be able to help you out more on the wiring side. Actually, I seem to recall that there was a website showing how to perform the modification...? The URL should be in the archives somewhere. Yellow TF using a Honda S2000 starter button. Looked great! |

Hi Mel, my Bro did mine as no wiring wizard either but looked very easy, not sure about your questions whether relay needed or not re amps, but here's mine and wiring diagram ( you will have to download diagram pic)and save to make bigger and be able to just about read it and perhaps zoom in as bit blurred and only pic i have , but basicaly There's 3 wires which connect to Starter Solenoid, Ignition switch and finally one to earth and that's all that is required.(and poss rely like mine) You still need your Key as this prevents the steering lock from engaging and of course prevents the car been stolen Dave you will have to copy and paste all this link into your browser to open as all link wont show on here http://uk.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/davidt6dcm@btopenworld.com/album?.dir=4b04&.src=ph |

thanks Dave, i,m having trouble opening the link, but i will try again later. One problem i have got already is that the button i have got only has two connections,so probably no earth. This project will either sink in or i,ll have to admit defeat and get someone else to do it !!! MEL .......... |
