MG MGF Technical - Starting PB...
On Friday, I was trying the code for desactivated the starting security (BTW it's the wrong code, is it the 1st and 3rd digit to increment by 1 ???) and start the car just to stop it after (might be not very good for the engine I know.....). On saturday morning, I just get into my car and try to start it. Engine start and then stall immediatelly... Strange thing was that the oil red warning ligh was not on before starting. Try several time and car won't start anymore. red oil level light still off before starting witch is not normal... Force the engine by using the accelerator, engine start and everything goes OK for the day. At the end of the day, when i shut down the engine, I try the possition 2 on the key and the red oil level warning light was on... So everything seem to return fine. My analysis is that during the fast starting-stopping test, oil stay in front of the captor, so ECU was a bit lost thinking engine is already running, or domething like that... BTW my oil level is fine (I've checked). So somebody ever try that ??? maxime |

hi maxime, sorry but no i haven’t tried it. however i am quite interested to know what this security code is for (i am assuming it’s nothing to do with the 4 digit code for getting the door lock undone). cheers t |

Yes, it's the security code but it's not related to the door lock - even if you do it in the door lock. It's related to the starter. Indeed there is a security on the starter witch is raised if the key AND the button box is in the car. If the button box is not there or if the battery of the button box is flat then the car won't start because the security is still there; Even if you've got the key. In order to bypass that you have to do the security code and then the key alone works. maxime |

Hey hey, My code was wrong indeed!!! So testbooked the car and good code :) (add 1 to 2nd and 4th digit!!!) maxime |

Thanks for the reminder Maxime :o) Must check that that 'trick' works for my car: the supplied 'immobiliser' code is wrong for my MGF as well. This seems to affect a lot of 'early' MGFs - and is something worth checking on ALL MGF/TFs! |

Yes Rob.... Mine is not an early F, she's been built in december 2000... Moreover I think TF does not have this code anymoer (but I'm not sure about that)... For example and for people like who does not know if the 1st digit is on the right or on the left. If the can given by your dealer is 1234 and it does not work, then the good code will be 1335 (2+1 and 4+1)... If you want to be sure, then has your dealer testbooked the car but careful under waranty it's free but after you will have to pay. for connecting the testbook to the car. maxime |
