MG MGF Technical - Steam Coming Out The Back
Guys, As I drove in this morning I looked in me mirror to see loads of steam coming out the back vents. The temp gauge didn't change at all, and when I looked under the car I saw a puddle of coolant. Checked the coolant level and it was fine, well a little low. The car is under the garage warrenty so I have booked it back with them ASAP. Don't think that it's HGF from these signs. Any ideas, my guess is that it's a hose. Regards, Mike Gibson |

Hmmm I wouldn't drive it until you are absolutely sure it's not HGF. Mike |

Definitely don't drive it until you've checked it out a bit more. Can you see where the coolant has come from? I had a split engine-return hose, which was spraying coolant around, but I could only see the source once I'd taken the engine cover off. Dave |

Hi Mike. You do seem to be having problems with your F - good job it's under warranty. BTW what is the current situation regarding the "bad handling" etc. Did you change tyres? To what? Any improvement? As I suggested before - many people offered advice and some report back would show which of the advice was OK |

Hello John, Tyres fixed the problem (Eagles). The main problem is finding out the problem in the first place with the F. I hope that this problem isn't a big one though. Regards, Mike Gibson |

10:1 its HGF. Good ol' warranty! |

Mike - I'm please that tyres fixed your problems. I bought my F at Easter with NCT3s fitted, didn't know any better and thought they were reasonably ok. Moving from 2.0 Mondeo to F, it was difficult to know what was car and what was me. Eventually had a dodgy moment and swapped to F1s. Like chalk and cheese on my car. The problem had probably been my driving but new tyres "improved my driving" so I'm happy. Do hope your new problem is not HGF but at least the warranty should pay the £400-600. Good luck |

I don't think that it is HGF as all the other signs arn't there. Regards, Mike Gibson |

Mike I would not expect the temperature gauge to change if the HGF had failed specially as you say you still had coolant left. Where abouts is it leeking from, above the alternator (drivers side front of engine) by any chance if so a good possibility of HGF. The other options is the expansion tank cap these can fail and cause similar symptons with loss of coolant and steam. Whatever it is get it to a garage ASAP. Glad to hear you got your handling problem sorted. Tom |

Tom, It's at the garage now. There was coolant on the top of the expansion tank. But the puddle was where you said, just behind the drivers side. Regards, Mike Gibson |

Had same problem this time last year, and same worries that it might be HGF probs. After reading advice on various sites I decided to change the expansion tank cap and this resolved the problem. Hope the solution is as easy for you Stu |
