MG MGF Technical - Steam from Engine

Problem on a MGF VVC 1999
Recently went on a 3 hr journey and whilst stuck in traffic engine had boiled dry filling the air with white steam. Let car cool down and refilled expansion tank. The level has not dropped ever since (Including the journey home). Any ideas what has caused this and how to stop it in the future - hopefully a hot summer ahead !

Cheers
L Upton

Well hopefully you have done any danage, BUT,
MGF's only have about two litres of coolant in the block at any given time so you may have blown the head gasket.

Areas to check are:-
#1 Does the radiator fan work?
#2 Does the thermostat work?
#3 Are there any leaks of coolant?

My money would be on #1

It it drained the coolant down you will need to bleed the coolant through not just top up the header tank.

I am sure someone will post a link to the procedure.

If it was me I would bleed it through BEFORE I drive the car any more!

Good point.

Have you replaced radiator expansion cap recently. £5.28 well spent.

Never hurts.

And check under bonnet fuse #2 (for the front Fan.)
I'd bet it has blown. :)
Replace with a stronger 20 Amp fuse in any way.

Well???
