MG MGF Technical - Steel wheels + snow tyres

I am thinking of fitting steel wheels + snow tyres to my 1997 MGF VVC. Does anyone know whether it is possible to purchase steel wheels? possibly another Rover model and what are the recommended snow tyre dimensions.
thanks in advance
Ian

You could try to get hold of some space saver spare wheels?

Have you tried talking to the Swiss MG guys?

As Ted suggests, get in touch with your local MGCC Switzerland Natter. The use of the steel wheels is common and they will give you all the info on availability and tyre sizes, or someone may come on the BBS shortly.

Maestro/Montego 14 inch steels will fit with the correct wheel nuts.
Gareth

Gareth's spot on - Maestro and Montego steel wheels will indeed bolt straight on. There is a picture somewhere on Dieter's website (http://www.mgfcar.de/) that shows an MGF on MG Maestro wheels complete with plastic wheel trims.

This is all assuming that you haven't upgraded to MGF Trophy/ TF AP racing front brakes ofcourse - the steel wheels will not fit over these beasties.
Rob Bell

Does this mean that the Maestro alloys will fit too!
Neil

Yes. Certainly, there are a number of Maestros running around with MGF alloys!

Hi Ian,

I daubt the mentioned wheels will be available in CH.
Better have a look for this Rims at Ebay. Wherein, you are quite late with the idea to source for winter equipment. You know, you have already one of the steel rims in the bonnet as spare wheel ? So look for only three of MGF spare wheels(rims) from any scrap yard :)

(German only)

Anyway, may be easier to source a set of second hand Alloy rims and put on 185/55R15 tires. More comfortable in any way.

Thanks to everyone for the info so far.
I rang the main dealer, no luck there. I went to EuroMaster, where they tried different wheels from Nissans, Hondas, Peugeots etc.. but nothing fitted. I also mentioned the fact that a Rover Montego/Maestro 14” wheel should fit. They could order the wheels but if they don’t fit I would have to keep them. Therefore I went to a scrap yard and picked up a wheel from a Rover, took this back to Euormaster (took me 10 mins to get the wheel + tyre in the car, didn’t want to get the front seat covered in crap, door was only half closed), they tried the wheel on but again no joy. I then returned the wheel to the scrap yard, this time I measured the PCD with special calipers, and armed with the correct PCD I checked some other Rovers myself. It was dark by now and I had to use my mobile phone to try and measure the cars. I have found a Rover that seems to be correct, I shall return today to pick up the wheel and try and fit it. I shall keep you posted on my little adventure.

Not all Rovers use the same PCD as the MGF - as you've already found Ian.

ONLY the Rover 100 (Metro), the Maestro and the Montego used the 95.25mm PCD - all other recent Rovers (and saloon MGs) use 100mm PCD.

Dieter is probably right - the easiest way forward is to buy a cheap set of MGF alloys off eBay, and use them instead - but steel wheels from the MMM cars are very cheaply available here in the UK.

I have managed to find 2 wheels from a Montego, I have ordered a new one (120 euros)plus my spare wheel, making 4. Need to buy some winter tyres and should be sorted, as long as I don't get a puncture. There is possibly an issue with the wheel nuts whether they might make a noise (conical washer).
I presume my 15 inch alloy wheel will not fit in the front.
It will be interesting to see how this car will handle with 185/65 front and back.
bye for now

>> I presume my 15 inch alloy wheel will not fit in the front. <<

It'll fit fine: you can even fit 16" alloys shod with 215/40 profile rubber in there with no difficulty at all - I know, I've done it! :o)

Good luck with the new wheels. Are you going to source some MG wheel covers?
Rob Bell

>ONLY the Rover 100 (Metro)...

That is only the K-series rover metro and 100

The early metros (a-series engine) were based on the mini and share the mini 4" PCD
Will Munns

Dieter suggested 175/65 but you are going for 185/65.
Will you still be able to fit small link snow chains with 185/65.

Dieter was correct with the tyre dimensions 175/65. I have fitted 2 winter tyres on the rear and will put the other 2 on next week (waitng for the new one to arrive). Next week should be interesting as it is snowing quite heavily at the moment.
Does anyone know of any MG wheel covers, that would fit the 14 inch Montego wheels?
Ian

Yes, there are, but IMO they look .. errrmm .. ugly from Metro.
http://www.mgfcar.de/teile/winterad.jpg

I bought some most cheap plastic covers for any 14" steel rims and used the original alloy center caps.
Just drill a big hole to the new covers centre, use a file for final diameter, push in the caps and secure with silicone from rear :)

btw, take care with the 175 wheels on dry roads. They could be dangerous in comparison with the summer setup and 15" wheels.

Good luck

They are actually Montego/Maestro wheel trims as Metro's had metric wheel trims.

You could try asking on www.triple-m.co.uk and see if anyone has a set they want to part with.
