MG MGF Technical - stepper motor valve location & cleaning

Was wondering if anyone out there can point me in the right direction of the above part via any of the technical sites or any photo's / diagrams they may have of their own engine bays. I'm an average DIY mechanic but usually rely on the good old Haynes when I'm stuck like I am right now :-(

I'm having a real 'mare with my '99 VVC at the mo in that when cold it's revs are very erratic to the point of stalling sometimes then back up to normal. I've browsed most of Dieter's site and other's out there and everywhere I look is mention of this valve to check & clean but no location diagrams or photo's to point me in the right direction unfortunately. I've got the engine bay cover removed at the mo and after plenty of deliberation & head scratching have decided to ask for help before I start removing bits n pieces.
I notice from other threads that this appears to be quite a common problem so I'm sure any help will be greatly appreciated by more than just myself.
Thanks in advance,
Phil

Hi Phil,

there's ni specific.

However, a ZS, I think.
IACV is located behind the yellow oil filler cap.

You need to remove the engine cover below the rear window.

Another from Erik's MGF:

The well know guy carries the dismantled IACV in his _white gloved_ hands :)

Location at the MPI, similar to the VVC location

And at last the subject itself.

Any more ;)

PS. if I could retire I promise I'd clean all of the 8.000 images on site ;)

Don't you believe it - when you retire you find that there are a load more things to do! BUT I LOVE IT - yes I know I am shouting :-)

Would just like to say a BIG Thanks to Dieter for the links to the pics in the above post which helped confirm my thoughts.
Also a BIG Thanks to mike for a point in the right direction.
Had the stepper motor off the car last night, stripped down, cleaned up, re-fitted & re-set and the F has behaved as it should to work & back today with no ranging up & down of the rev's & a very stable idle too.
Once again a big Thanks chaps.

Hi guys. This was a new one to me but I was wondering Phil is the removal of this valve and its construction simple enough to allow for its removal each time one had the engine cover off to give it a good clean out.You said you reset it.What exactly does that mean? I have never come across this device before but would surmise its some sort of piston inside rather like a pre-engaged starter motor solenoid ie not a lot of moving parts. My 97 VVC has only done 34k so I would hope would have no probs but if it was a dead easy job I would like to clean out this valve every time,or is it best to leave well alone????
MR Blencowe

Hi,
Once I'd confirmed it's location from Dieter's pic's it was a relatively simple job.
Just disconnect wiring plug, remove rubber hose, 4 Torx screws to remove and the whole thing comes off.
Once removed the motor is split by removing a further 2 Torx screws and simply parting.
Once off the stepper motor valve is unscrewed (beware the spring imside) cleaned up and re-fitted in simple reverse order.
Someone more techinically minded may be along with a far better description with correct part names but it really is that simple.
As for re-setting the Stepper motor once it's re-fitted it's a simple procedure as follows:-
1) Start engine & warm to normal operating temperature.
2) Turn off ignition
3) Turn ignition on to position II (but don't start the engine)
4) Press accelerator fully down and release 5 times in succession.
5)Wait for at least 15 seconds and turn ignition off.
6) Start the engine and stepper should be re-set.

HTH Phil

BTW, a strip down, clean up & re-set of the stepper cured my idling / ranging rev's problems which had been bugging me for ages! !

Easy to follow post.

well done!
