MG MGF Technical - Sticking Tappets?
I've changed the oil recently on my 97 1.8Mpi for the second time since I bought it and again I used Castrol GTX Magnatec which I had no problems with previously. However the engine does sound very tappety now. I know the VVC engines can sound like this but havent heard much about the MPi suffering. I've also just fitted a MS Sprint exhaust as well but I dont think this should have had any effect. How can I check if the tappets are sticking (as they're prone to do!). Is it a visual check that can be done by removing the cam cover or something more in depth? Thanks |

Bob When this question arose on the BBS a few weeks back mike suggested using a can of "sticky hydraulic tappet cleaner". I was browsing around our local motor factor last week to see what I could buy and got a can and poured it in. It may not be a miracle cure but it does seem to have made a difference after about 500 miles. Does no harm and can do some good and certainly cheaper than a new VVC unit 'just in case'. Before anybody asks, the empty can is at home and I cannot remember who made it - could be STP |

Thanks. I'll pop into Halfrauds tonight and have a look! |

Also do check the oil level, people often forget the amount of oil swallowed by a dry oil filter, and low oil levels gives tappty noises. |

Check the oil level regularly and it's about 1mm below the max level so should be fine and made sure I filled it up when changing the oil, ran it with the new filter on and topped it up accordingly. |

OK, not that then ! |
