MG MGF Technical - Sticky Windows
Has anybody got a cure for juddery windows?? When I lower or raise the driver or passenger windows on my F they seem to be sticking. The car is a 96 MGF. Any ideas? Thanks, Sean.

Sean, I had this problem very briefly. The window seal on the inside is a kind of felt on rubber type seal, and when wet or worn can stick to the window. Fortunately mine dried out, and is OK now. However I think if the felt type stuff was worn, and it was just rubber this might also cause a problem. It's the part that is attached to the door panel, when removed. Not sure if you could just order a new seal or not. Hope you get it fixed, mine annoyed the hell out of me for about a week. Paul

Thanks Paul, Yep it sure is annoying.... I'm not sure if it's part you mentioned though because I can see scuff marks and small scratches around the very edge of the glass. Does the glass move on runners(guide rails)? Sean.

both your windows are juddering?? did it suddenly start happening or has it always done it? Mine was just the passenger window, as the door panel got wet when i was replacing the window stop. Scuff marks? doesn't sound good :-(

Paul, I bought the car in Feb, so it's been doing since then.

Put the window completely down and clean the felt strips with a damp cloth. I suspect trapped dirt or grit could be the problem. Might not fix it, but worth a try as it's free! HTH, Leigh

Also remove the door trim and check that all the bolts holding together the window mechanism are tight. There are several and some have been known to work loose. Check Dieters site for instructions. Spyros

My drivers window has juddered slightly since I bought my F last year. I recently popped a window stop, and had to take the door apart to get access to fix. Inside the door (at the front) there is a runner which is curved to allow the window to fit flush with the seal (it sort of pushes the window toward the back of the car if you know what I mean) I gave this a clean out (lots of green goo). This cured my particular juddering problem. (on my car that is!!) Rog.

you could always try a little WD40 in the channel or french chalk (if it still exists) Mike

Agree with all the above and also check that the guides which the windows run in are not too loose ie not too far away from the window glass. If the glass is allowed to run slightly askew it will cause a minor jam which then unsticks and on to another minor jam. Imagine a piston in a very worn cylinder, it doesn't run straight but wears on one side at the top and the other side at the bottom. Loose is as bad as too tight for window guides. Also as mentioned above, check the condition of the material in the guides. Good luck Bruce

Thanks to all for the advise.. Is it hard to get the door panels off the check all this? Sean

See http://www.mgfworld.co.uk/windowstop.htm#doorpanel Some of the mad plastic studs will break, but they can replaced easy, if MGR is able to supply them again later at any time. HTH Dieter
