MG MGF Technical - Stop me if you've heard this one before...
It's the one about the rear screen on my F having a gaping hole in it after the recent cold snap and what have you. Anyway, given that my insurance company have kindly told me to get stuffed, it seems that the best course of action is to remove the current screen and send it to be refurbished. And these are the folk that do it: http://www.softtopwindows.co.uk/ Anyway, given that I live some great distance from Croydon it'll have to done by mail. Which is fair enough, but what's the kind of turnaround with these good folk? My F isn't garaged, you see. As far as the procedure is concerned, you just drill out the existing rivets. Once you've got the replacement screen you rivet it back. Is replacement a fiddly prodcedure? Would I be best advised leaving the riveting to my local MG dealer? (My F is due an imminent service.) Or is riveting a replacement screen generally idiot proof? Other dumb questions: where'd I get a rivet gun from? What kind of rivets are used? |

Dennis Not done it myself but watched a Coach Trimmer do it (including fitting a new zip for me with bigger teeth). Didn't look difficult and he used a common pop-rivet gun from Halfords or any Toot Shop or many Hardware Stores etc. |

dennis, do you think your insurance company would also tell you to get stuffed if you had damage caused by say lightning, or a tree falling on it? think i’d change companies and tell them to get stuffed. good luck though with the replacement (fingers crosssed for a run of dry days!) t |

Dennis, maybe for you a better solution to buy a new (secondhand) back window from somebody like Midland MGF - they had several at Stoneleigh last weekend at what I thought at the time was a reasonable price but can't remember now (another senior moment). Somebody will shortly post a phone no for them I'm sure.... |

If you can work a drill I'd recommend having a go yourself. I had no problems drilling out and replacing the rivets and I'm not exactly brilliant at DIY. I sent mine away and got it back by return from Soft Top Windows (they even send you the rivets to attach it back in place!) |

you might want to get a MS sunmate or a car cover from halfords in the meantime. |
Will Munns |
If you do it over the next few days you might want to get a RAINmate from John Lewis |
