MG MGF Technical - Strange engine noise when I decelerate

Hi

When I take my foot of the accelerator to move down the gears at speed, there's a strange ticking noise from the engine. Hard to explain the sound, but it's like if you 'tut' several times. Sorry LOL, that's the only way I can describe the sound.

Any ideas what this could be?
DanDare

Hi Dan,

Could be a slight leak in the exhaust gasket, only opening up as the engine shifts position on the mounts. You could try facing the car downhill and then trying to reverse against the handbrake, that would angle the engine in a similar way. Probably a more reliable diagnosis would be to have an exhaust shop check it out, they will be able to move the exhaust around relative to the engine and any leak should be fairly easy to pinpoint.

Really hard to diagnose a noise over a media like this - I suspect that you may need the learned ears of a mechanic to help you out (or another MGF owner!) - but Mike's theory is a good one, and I would suggest that another area to look at are the engine mounts. They can collapse - and with torque reaction, the engine would be expected to move. Might result in more of a 'clunk' though?

Hope you get this sorted, and do let us know what the mystery noise was :o)

I have a similar problem (tut, tut ,tut noise) when I accelerate too hard with Viv in the passenger seat, it also happens when I exceed a certain speed limit, funny it's not there when I travel alone ;-)

Mike
p.s. that should say when I'm back in the UK, It's been nearly a year now since I've driven either of my cars !
mike

thanks for the feedback. I'll update this when I find out what it is. I might even try recording the sound and posting it :D

I have something very similar, when passing through say 3000rpm, I get a noise like that which I have assumed to be related to the alternator. I'ts really noticeable on decelleration, but sometimes also on acceleration. Tutting is close to what I have if I could tut fast enough but what if I described a bone dry, worn bearing sound or a grasshopper, does that still fit the bill?
Marcus

Probably just your car complaining because your are slowing down? ;-)

Okay, okay I'm going.... :)

Are you sure it's not just the unburnt fuel igniting, and the tutting or popping is coming from your exhaust ?
