MG MGF Technical - Strange Noise (passenger rear wheel i think?)

Hey up
Last night and a little of today i have heard a strange noise coming from the rear passenger side wheel (i think)
It only happens on a certain road ??
It only happens when the car is warm, as when its cold it doesnt appear (or i cant hear it)

To me (the untrained) it appears to be realated to the brakes sounding like they are starting to bind

Had the rear wheel off this afternoon, poked around and checked all was clean etc
No groves in the brake disc (fingernail felt smooth over it)
could not do anything with the calliper as it was only jacked up and not on ramps or stands

replaced wheel went for a spin

noise didnt appear again, i thought i heard it once, but then nothing

the noise did sound like a kind of scraping / squealing sort of sound, not overly loud

Anyone any ideas

Slayer.

Not an expert but had the same on another car, and it turned out to be anti-rattle shims on brake pads!!.

The rear pads on the F have a small metal strip that rubs against the edge of the disk when the pads are knackered - or just about to be. Many Rovers have the same device. Audible warning of brake pad wear.

Service in 2 weeks will now include new set of pads

thanks John

ill have a look at the pad wear when its light :)

i didnt particually notice that they had gone, but then again i wasnt particually looking for that really

This could also be siezure of the rear brake caliper - not that uncommon on cars that are used gently or infrequently. If the car's going in for a service soon, then get them to have a look for you. :o)

update

drove home tonight and the noise is definitly attributed to breaking, it got progressivly louder as the journey progressed.

It seems to sound more like a kind of buzzing than a scraping or squealing, so i guess it could be what JohnP said and be the metal strip vibrating against the disc. That is what it sounds like

thanks for the advice

Update 2

Got the local (good) mechanic to look at my car today
sure enough as JohnP suggested required new pads on the rear
all now fitted and well

no more noise

thanks JohnP
