MG MGF Technical - strange springy noise!

Hi,

I'm getting a strange metallicy tinkly springy noise coming from somewhere behind the dash (I think) when the car goes over bumps.

The noise is very difficult to pinpoint cause it doesn't happen all the time and I'm driving when it does!

I know this is a long shot, but has anyone had anything like this?

With the car stationary, you could try bouncing the corner's of the car.

This is how i found my squeak, which was a loose bolt on top of my shocker mount.

What is a springy type noise?

I think you may have just solved a problem which I discovered last night.

Heard serious mice coming from around the dash area which vanished when the car was under braking, tried bouncing the wings and sure enough that's where the squeak was coming from. Might attack the shock bolt with a socket tonight...

Probably caused by a 1st Lotus activity day last Thursday I suspect.... :o)

springy type noise... sounds like a thin spring knocking against some metal, and kinda tinkles...

Best I can do I'm afraid! It's certainly not a squeak, and seems to be inside the car somewhere.

The noise I heard I could have swarn was coming from inside the car too, but I'm almost certain that it's the suspension after a judicious amount of bouncing on the wings.

okay, bounced around on the wings last night, nothing!! This morning it sounded like it was coming from behind me... arrrrggggh it's driving me mad!!

...could it be the handbrake cable rattle (see archives) ?

It sounds very light and metallicy, almost like wind-chimes, yet not as defined... not helping here am I!!

Hi Chris,

I had the very same noise on my 2001, my pal had the same on hus 2000.....
Took my car back to the dealers and they padded behind the dash, seems to have solved the issue...

aha, okay I'll see if I can have a dig around back there... I wonder why this should suddenly start happening?? had the car for 3 years without this annoyance! hmmm <scratches head>

Had this on my sisters car! After a quick drive around and a little confusion it was one of the springs on the hood release mechanism!
Worth a look and a cheap fix!
Got a pint out of it to!

Had an annoying squeak on mine which came from behind the dash. Found out it was a corner of the bonnet rubbing on the wing. Rear corner.
