MG MGF Technical - strange starting...help
dunno if anyone else has suffered with this or can offer any help. the car starts fine when cold but when its hot, if i try and start it shortly after switching off it gives half a turn then hesitates for a second then turns again and fires.if i leave the car for 20 mins or so it starts fine.its beggining to make me nervous,i hope it aint the starter cause they are about £250 ...ouch.not a difficult job i dont think.....? cheers mik |

Is it Mpi or VVC, as there are differences to take into account. Coil may be the culprit. Johan |

its a 96 mpi,i have made sure the conections to the starter are ok,i have read a few threads with similar symptoms but know answers. |

Coil may have a short that connects when warm, but after cooling down it works perfect again. Johan |

Can't be the starter or battery as long as the starter turns the engine. Ignition as said by Johan, or .. may be to much fuel due to a failure of any temperature sensor (ECU related temp sensors of course). I'd see for the inlet manifold temperature sensor connection and harness to the ECU and sensor itself. http://www.mgfcar.de/sensor/air_inlet_temp_sc02208.jpg Wire at the ECU connector http://www.mgfcar.de/mems1.9/iat_2.33.jpg Just one more option. for a second the starter doesnt actually turn the engine over,it gives half a turn then it seems as though there is some pressure somewhere and the engine cant turn, a second later it turns over again and fires up.this is with the key still held on start. |

i thought it could be timing but its not adjustable is it? |
