MG MGF Technical - Suspension Height

Could anyone please tell me what the hydro suspension height should be for my mgf trophy i've had it done but it is extremely high and when I took it back they said it will settle and that it is within the correct dimensions - but looking at it the wheel arch is a good 4 inches (20 cm) above the tyre. It does not seem to state in the handbook either or if it does I cant see it. Any advice greatly appreciated. Thanks - Teresa.

The Trophy should be 20mm lower than a standard MGF. So, if you measure each of the front wheels from the centre of the wheel (car sitting on level ground) vertically to the underside of your front wheel arch it should be 348mm +/- 10mm at 17°C. Allow 0.6mm for every degree different from 17°C. Note that you only need to measure both front wheels because each side is connected front and back (back sorts itself out).

That does sound much higher than it should be. Was the person setting the height aware that the Trophy has a 25mm lower ride height than standard F spec? 365mm from the exact centre of the wheel to the lip of the wheelarch is the non-Trophy height, so Trophy spec is 340mm, which should give a gap between tyre & arch of just over 2 inches. Yes the height may settle a little, but only by a few millimetres, provided the system was correctly set up, i.e. emptied by vacuum to ensure no air is in the system & then re-filled. Any settling of the height will occur within 48hrs, so it does sound as if they have over-filled it by a significant amount.

There is a supplement to the standard handbook provided with the Trophy 160 which details the model-specific figures. The other trap many tyre shops & even MGR dealers fall into is that the tyre pressures for the Trophy wheels are very different from standard - watch out for that too ;o)

Bandit,

Only a small point, but according to the manual the Trophy Suspension Trim Heights are -

348mm +/- 10mm Front and
343mm +/- 10mm Rear

My car has 30mm lowering pins fitted and when it's at the correct height I can just get 2 fingers with a little play between the tyre and wheel arch. On a Trophy this will be a "rattling" two fingers or a tight three fingers.

Thank you for your very helpful comments - I am taking car back to the garage today to get it adjusted

Possible to adjust the height of your car DIY - so long as you are careful: http://mgf.ultimatemg.com/group2/DIY/suspension/howto_lower.htm
