MG MGF Technical - Susspender questions!?.

My F is going into the garage this week to source the slight knocking noise its developed underneath.

Any as a pre-empt, If it turns out to be shock/s, I will replace all four. Is there a better than standard shock I could fit without going for the fully ajustable type? ( would like, but believe can cause mount problems). will Trophy ones bolt straight on??.

Also have noticed ride height is a little lower on offside (about 10mm) so will get checked while its in, but as I have 17s fitted (40s tyres),original 15s with 60s tyres, what will be the right measure between hub centre and wheel arch?.

TIA

Haven't got a link at the mo but tyre company sites should show the rolling circumference for various tyres and/or diameter. If 15" combo same as 17" combo then ride height as normal. Adjust according to chart.

there may be one on toyo.co.uk

Talk to Techspeed as they do non adjustable shocks which are setup specially for the F.

The knocking noise could be the shock bushes knackered?

e.g. TOYO T1-R

205/50/15 diam = 587 mm
205/40/17 diam = 600 mm
215/40/17 diam = 604 mm

so worst case is 604 - 587 / 2 = 9 mm

but isn't the ride height the same anyway, assuming that the spheres are at the correct 400 psi? The height is measured from centre of wheel to underside of arch, not from the ground up. This is why some people have problems with wheel arch rubbing with bigger wheels - the height stays the same but the wheels get bigger.

Thanks Tom.

Thats what I thought but.... my F is sitting around 330mm, given that it should be around 370mm, thats makes it around 1,1/2" to low, if was taken up that much it would look like "Bigfoot", you could walk under the car!!, hence my question re-17s.
Mark.L

I understand your reasons Mark. I'm assuming you know if the car has been lowered with new knuckles? Has it always been that low? Or did you "blow a seal" (as the penguin joke goes) on the track recently? I would expect the 17" to lift the car up about 9 mm overall, reduce the gap between tyre and arch by a similar amount but maintain the 368 +/- 10 mm (or whatever) from wheel center to under edge of the arch trim.

Just for personal interest I'm going to don sou'wester and galoshes and go out to measure my TF.
JohnP

My TF135 standard suspension, standard 15", standard tyres, 8000 miles from new is standing at 352 mm both sides. I know there is not much comparison and mine can't be pumped up but it was just for interest.

Sorry JP, just been watching the first half of the " couldnt hit a Cows ar*e with a banjo competition".

>>blow a seal<<.

Maybe, the offside is down to 320mm, and thats the side that the knocking noise is coming from, so could be due a re-gas.

Just hope the units have not blown :o(
